Good work, Nozzel. I saw that too but I was too lazy to say anything. :)

Had my one year post-op visit with my surgeon yesterday, even though it's only actually 11 months.

He said everything is healing well and that as far as he's concerned, his work is done. I don't see him again until May 2018.

Two funny things: Surgeon was looking at my x-ray and he says out of nowhere, "Holy crap you have a small jaw!" LOL...did he not notice that over the past 2.5 years that I've been seeing him?

Then when I was in the office with his assistant, she was like, "You STILL have your braces on? Wow. Well hopefully you'll get them off by the time you turn 30." I was like, "I turn 30 this Friday, so I don't think so." Talk about adding insult to injury!

Awwwwwww ouch :( The assistant just haaad to say something, huh? But I guess she just meant that you should be out of braces soon, and unless they want to keep trying to close that gap, I bet she's right.

Your surgeon just now noticed you have a small jaw after he cut you open and visually inspected it?

That's awesome that you had your 1-year appointment! I haven't called in to schedule one. As far as I know, my surgeon didn't recommend it, nor did she recommend coming back in at 3 years post-op. I think I'll take it upon myself tho, if only to discuss the bony ridge thing, the kinda lopsided swelling, and maybe what the deal with my chin would be if I decided to get it straightened. She mentioned that my chin, while much straighter than it was before, is still a little crooked. She said it looks fine because my nose is also crooked (Yay! There's something to be said for consistency! ). BUT if I had my nose done, maybe I'd want my chin straightened. I'd be concerned about significant additional risk of permanent numbness tho. It seems to me like people who had the chin moved twice almost always have worse permanent numbness the second time around. That's a good argument for just leaving things be 8)

Jaime; that's almost shocking the surgeon is just noticed your jaw size. Nice little jab from the staff too...

I'm right there with you. My 2 year braces anniversary is in a couple weeks. No end in sight; still have the open left side and a couple teeth need to rotate. I hope they'll be off by the new year.

The only appointment my surgeon requested was after I got my braces off. Looking back; I wish I had pressured my surgeon more than I did about the width and the cant. If I had the multi piece Lefort; I'd probably be done by now.

Snap, you'll have to let us know what the surgeon thinks about your concerns. Interesting that she didn't want a year post-op appointment.

Part of me wants to get my nose done too but I do think that all this can be a slippery slope.

Nozzel, we are pretty much in the same exact boat still. Every ortho appointment brings hope that a debrace date may get mentioned, and then my hopes and dreams are crushed once again.

My sister in law sent me an article the other day about a girl who underwent jaw surgery. I only skimmed it because well, you know, been there done that  but my SIL said she was surprised there was such a big emotional side of the surgery. It is sort of all-consuming and I don't think any of us are out of the woods yet.

Well, maybe she did want a year post-op and I'm just misremembering it. Yeah, slippery slope indeed... :|

You know, I recall thinking the same thing when I had braces as a teen. I'd go in like once a month or so and I'd be thinking "Everything looks fine. Are they gonna bring up taking my braces off?" and they didn't, over and over again. The good thing was that the first time they mentioned it, it was "we'll take them off at your next appointment".

Jaime's got a new vid on youtube (couple days ago;) and we've got a new thread title! (to help eliminate some confusion)

ANOTHER orthodontist appointment today. More small bends in the wires and he's slowly closing the gap on the left side. He started rotating the lower canine too. I'm actually feeling my front left teeth touch for the first time in 2+ years!! So that's good; but wow it stings a bit from the work done today; maybe it's the nerves being overstimulated from not being used. I didn't ask about an end date and none was given. My next appt is in 3.5 weeks. I'm going to do my research on retainers. Maybe I'll ask for a positioner to let things settle before making retainers (I'm currently clenching at night so that would actually work better!) Possibly have a removeable Herbst made so I can confidently get rid of the CPAP mask (yes I still have small issues during REM sleep)

You want a Herbst? Aauuuughhhhhhh...

I guess I can't really comment because I've never had to use a CPAP...maybe a Herbst is preferential?

That's great that your left side is finally closing! Maybe I should switch orthos and start coming to yours!

What do you mean by a positioner?

I think I want the removable Herbst more than I dislike the CPAP machine and all the headaches it brings with it. I still have very mild OSA and I'm thinking that bringing the lower jaw forward at night would help. It would be a combo appliance for me; retainer and sleep apnea appliance. If I'm going to wear retainers they might as well do something to help my OSA. And it's pocket size instead of carry on size with all the BS...

The positioner is a softer type of retainer that allows the teeth to settle and find their real position after braces come off. It's one piece and covers both the top and bottom arches. It's an active type of retainer and you clench your teeth to help the process along. The final retainers are made a couple weeks after using the positioner.

Nozzelnut - Are you breathing through your nose when you're having these OSA events? Also, I know they advertise some sort of anti-OSA/anti-snoring appliance on the radio here in NYC that sounds like it's similar to how I think a removable Herbst would function. I did a quick google search and it's called a Zyppah. I assume you've already looked into it, but I figured I'd throw it out there just in case.

Right now my events are during REM sleep. Mostly hypopneas; a rare obstructive or central. A LOT better than when I started; AHI of around 40. My last sleep study (Feb of this year) my AHI was 6. So very mild apnea; almost gone/normal. Normal being less than 5/hour. Wearing my mask I usually have an AHI around .40 . I follow my data using a couple programs.

I've been a mouth breather as far back as I remember. Even that's getting better. I'm catching myself breathing through my nose with my mouth closed throughout the day. I'm not sure if my mouth is open or closed during events.

There's a bunch of sleep apnea appliances out there. I thought about going that route when I first started but they don't work well for folks with high AHI's. That's why they're back on the table now. The TAP appliance is probably the most popular; but I don't like how it hooks the jaws together. I don't think I'd be able to tolerate that. The reason I'm leaning towards the removable Herbst is if I clench it will bring the lower jaw forward opening the airway. It's adjustable and the trays are similar to essix style retainers. I'm not too worried about the bars or metal or other stuff because I'm pretty much used to it by now. If it doubles as a retainer; even better!

Yeah, that'd be neat to combine it with your retainer. Two birds with one stone!

I have the same history of mouth breathing. I started purposefully breathing through my nose when I was able to post-op. It's probably 9-10 months since I started and already it feels unnatural to breathe through my mouth. Someone on here said you're supposed to keep your tongue and jaws in the position as if you're ending the "N" sound. I've been focusing on that and it's gotten more and more natural until now I do it pretty much all the time. It also makes my neck look better  Have you tried forcing yourself to breathe through your nose? It sounds like you don't really worry about it.

I've been doing a lot better with breathing through my nose. It's just hard to break the habit of it after years of not being able breath through it. Even with all the room made by the surgery, the expansion and the braces; sometimes my tongue still feels too big. Don't get me wrong it's a lot better, but a little more room would be great.

I agree with you Nozzel...my tongue still feels too big.

Thanks for posting that vid Snap, I'm going to watch it.

Had another ortho appointment last night. No more nighttime class II elastics, I've got my tiny elastics pulling my molars together again. For the record, we tried this from about July or August-November last year and it did nothing.

Me: Have you ever seen this work the second time after not working the first time? I'm not optimistic about it.
Ortho: I've never seen it not work the first time.

My next appointment is in 6 weeks and if it hasn't closed at all in that time, I'm planning to tell him to give up on it if he's not going to try anything else. I think he's probably right in that the molar is ankylosed. The lower molar currently hurts from the new pressure on it but the upper one does not and I don't think it ever has in all our trying. That tooth has definitely had some trauma to it over the years so it's not surprising it has fought back and ruined my quest to have perfect teeth.

Oh well. I spent the long weekend with some friends, one of whom had braces for SIX YEARS and still has a noticeable gap between his teeth.
