Anyone have orthognathic surgery in Austin, TX?

#1 Post by schoenmomma »

Hi there everyone!

I'm new to the orthognathic/braces forum and just wanted to say hello. I have been recently investigating a solution for my ongoing jaw issues-- and may end up having to have upper jaw surgery to correct a Class 3 (I think I'm correct on this? May be using the wrong class?!) problem. Basically I have a deficient upper jaw and oversized lower jaw.

The surgeon and orthodontist are hoping to correct my problem (and bite) with braces and surgery to move just the upper jaw. They both said that aesthetic results for patients with my situation tend to be better and that they felt they could achieve needed correction by just moving upper. Is that typical? Has anyone out there had this type of correction?

I live in Austin, TX and am also curious if anyone on this forum has been treated by an oral surgeon in Austin. I want to make sure I go to a GREAT, very experienced surgeon and while the original doc I spoke with seems proficient, am very open to hearing others' stories. I realize this is not a small undertaking and want to make sure I'll be in good hands.

If there isn't anyone else on the forum from Texas, what are good ways to verify skillsets and experience? Find out the doctor's perspectives on possible complications? Is there any way short of forums like this to talk to other patients who have had or are having this procedure?

Thanks in advance for the help! Hope you all are having a great day.

HI Schoenmomma,

I live in Austin and will be having orthognathic surgery early next year. Dr Andrea Quaroni will be performing my surgery. He took out my wisdom teeth this year and did an excellent job. He will be performing lower jaw surgery on me. If you haven't had a consulation with him yet, I would suggest seeing him. The only bad thing is you may have to wait 2 months or so to get in and he tends to be late on his appointments, but it is well worth it.

Hey there!

I also live in Austin and will be having oral surgery in about a month....mind if I ask who your ortho is? I see Dr. Nelson out on Jollyville Road. My surgery is a simple one though...just a frenectomy to make it so that my front teeth can come together properly.

I'm not sure if you've had your surgery yet or not, if you haven't....mine is being done by Robert Ramirez, DDS, MS in Austin.

Hi Sarah,

I live in San Antonio and had a good surgeon. What I looked for was someone who was board-certified in Oral/Maxillofacial surgery and someone who would answer all my questions. I didn't have too many, since I did so much research before I got my braces and scheduled surgery!

I also asked how many surgeries he had done and it was important that he was on my health plan. Orthodontists also like to work with doctors whom they know, so there's another source of info.

Best wishes,

Lo
