I'm due to have surgery first thing in the morning of the 7th November. I've got a work up appointment on 17th October with the surgeon but my orthodontist reckons my movements are going to be pretty big:
Maxilla (upper jaw) - 5mm up on one side and 7mm up on the other (to correct a 2mm cant) and out by about 4-5mm and correct an anterior openbite
Mandible (lower jaw) - correct the overbite of 9mm and bring forward a further 4-5mm to match maxilla movement - so a possible 13-14mm move in total for the bottom (eek!) They will also correct the condylar hyperplasia that I have on my right side (one side is shorter than the other)
No genio planned at present...phew!
I'm planning to blog it all so anyone who's interested can share the journey....

Sweetpea, my lower jaw is retrognathic so both sides are too short, but one side got the idea better than the other! I had no idea I was so assymetrical until I saw the orthodontist. It'll be good to stay in touch to keep pace with one another's surgery experiences. Glad to have some company!

Wishing you the best on November 7th...can't believe it but it's close to a year since I had my surgery, November 8, 2006. No regrets at all.

I am only six months into my braces journey and probably a year from getting my surgery date. 
Hi Genevieve, my surgery is scheduled for the 28th of November. I'm having a BSSO, LF1 & genio for an overbite, TMJ and condylar hypoplasia.
I live in Surrey and I'm having it all done privately. I'm curious to know whether any other members living in the UK have ventured away from the NHS as it would be interesting to compare costs! Anyway congrats on finalising a surgery date.

Yes, I am having my work done privately - but then I work for one of the big private health insurers, which is really fortunate as its going to cost a packet.
I'm having my treatment at the McIndoe Centre in East Grinstead. I had my SARPE done there last year and it was a very good experience, so I know that I'm in safe hands.

I am also having a BSSO and Lefort1 on Oct 23rd. My left side is longer than the right causing a significant crossbite and maxillary hyperplasia also my upper jaw sits croocked and I have mandibular hypoplasia.
I will be looking for updates on how your surgery went.

Thanks NCRN and Genevieve. My op is now 29th.
They are going to level the cant in the top by 3mm, and move it forward 3mm. Then angle the lower jaw to fit the teeth and improve the symmetry - 4 cm longer on the right hand side now. They were going to do the chin and not anymore which I'm very disappointed about because it looks like a witches chin. He said he could do it later, but I'm very impatient having waited from the age of 39 on the NHS waiting list. I hope all will be done by next summer at 47!

I had my pre-op appointment today and my experience was very similar to NCRN's (only not quite as thorough). I had impressions and a wax mould done, measurements taken - including one which used an instrument that looked like a head vice from a scene of medieval torture. I was then sent off to have a panoramic x-ray and photos. It was all very straight forward and over quickly.
One interesting thing I did pick up from the surgeon though, is that the infamous "wall" that people hit, is not so much due to the drugs in your body, or learning to live with a swollen face. No, apparently he puts it down to the fact that there is usually a big build up to the op - months or sometimes years - and folks tend to feel a bit of an anti-climax once it's all over. I guess for most of us, there are very few things in life that we wait so long for!
If anyone is interested, the cost of the treatment is going to be around £6,000, if I've got my sterling/dollar rate correct, that's just over $12,000:
£700/$1400 for outpatient costs - that's work-up, all the lab fees & follow ups
£2200/$4400 for the surgery itself - not a bad rate for 3 hours!
£2500/$5000 hospital fees - two nights stay - should really be 7*, eh?
£560/$1141 anaesthetist/anaesthesiologist
Soon adds up, huh? Thank goodness I work for a health insurance company, that's all I can say!!
