Changes to wire

#1 Post by PCPFORMULA »

how long after surgery does the ortho normally change wires and removes hooks?

Im 8 weeks post op, I just want the hooks removed and into a normal wire<My wire is divided into sections on my upper>

I was last at the ortho 2 weeks ago when I thought they were going to put in a new wire on the upper, I got the impression they were to busy as I had to wait 45 mins to be seen, I was in for a matter of mins, my next app is not until next month and I feel if the wire and hooks can come off now, they should be off!

I was thinking on phoning and trying to get an appointment next week to get these removed, is it the norm to have hooks and heavy wires in this long after surgery, I had upper only, no elastics or splints and no teeth have moved despite 2 brackets popped off on 1 lower tooth at the front and one upper tooth at the front.

can anyone advise?

thanks for any opinions on this subject, everyone has been a great help over the past 8 weeks

I had hooks for 2 months post surgery BSSO, since I needed elastics. They did grind off the extra hooks at my request 1 moth post-op. I had 15 of them!

I kept the surgical wire for 1 month before it was changed. I was told they like to keep the heavy surgical wire for awhile in case of the need for elastics and also to keep the bite from moving before going back to Ortho.

I was also disappointed at my first Ortho appt.!

Hello PCPFORMULA,

Unfortunately, I am no help to you. I was actually wondering if I could ask you a few questions. I had SARPE on June 1st and am supposed to have upper jaw sugery (Lefort I) sometime in the spring/early summer. What kind of surgery did you have?
I am trying to prepare myself as much as possible but, I'm finding few people that have just had upper surgery.

Thanks!!
Michelle

Hi PCP.

I went into my orthodontist about 4 weeks after my surgery and he just looked at it and said he didn't want to do anything then but he's got me booked in for the start of November(which would be about 9 weeks post op) for a half hour procedure so I presume he's going to do a fair bit then.

I'm at 5 weeks post-op from double jaw surgery and my OS just released me to my ortho. He had predicted between 4-6 weeks in my case. My bite was perfect from day one after surgery and after 4 weeks of elastics he's removed them saying I didn't need them anymore. After one week without them I haven't seen any movement at all. When I see my ortho on Monday I'll be over 5 weeks post-op. The wires will be changed and the hooks will be OFF!!

We've seen the whole spectrum on AW on when poeple are released to their orthos. Possibly it depends on your bite and how close to the perfect bite you are before resuming ortho treatment.
