Surgery Friday Oct. 19!!

#1 Post by JJ »

So my big day is finally here! I feel like I have been waiting for so long but the last few weeks have just flown by and I am a bit nervous. I am having segmented Leforte 1 to widen, advance and bring down my upper jaw. He said the movement forward will be about 3mm. I am also having genioplasty to decrease the length of my chin slightly as this was recommended for a more symmetrical face. I will definitely post afterwards to report how all is going. I have been lurking on the boards since I got my braces on 8 months ago and it has been such a big help in preparation. I got the zip n' sqeeze bags a while ago off line. But at my pre-surg appointment on Monday the surgeons office gave me a backpack full of all the equipment needed including the zip n' speeze bags, cold packs, head wrap, guide to recovery etc. I was impressed!
So any last minute words of wisdom??

Best wishes, JJ! Sounds like you're pretty well prepared. You might want to re-read some orthognathic stories to see if something catches your eye you might have forgotten about. Are you set up for ice? Pen and paper? Blender and a stocked fridge?

Let us know how it goes!

Good luck, JJ, hope everything goes really well for you. I had a similar surgery 4 weeks ago and I have to say the week before was the worst part of it all. Surgery and recovery so far has been far easier than my imagination led me to believe. Hope it works that way for you too. Looking forward to your post-surgery post.

And I have to reiterate Meraten's advice about walking and exercise - the days that I was lazy about it were the days I swelled up more.

You'll do fine, JJ! Sleeping propped up really helps with swelling. Don't expect too much of yourself at first and just let your body rest. No letting your daily walks slide, of course 8) .

See you on the other side!

Thanks everyone for your well wishes and advice :D I am heading up tonight for the surgery as it is about 2.5 hours from where I live. My surgeon said he will keep me 2 nights in hospital. So I will post after that!

Update! I made it..

Hi All.
So I finally made it to the "other side". I had my surgery on Friday Oct. 19, stayed 2 nights in hospital and came home yesterday. My surgeory was segmented Leforte 1 and genioplasty on my chin. My surgeon said that everything went great and quicker thn he expected. I woke up crying in the recovery room .. sometimes being put under does that to people. I was moved to my room where I started vomiting blood a few times that afternoon. My nose was also bleeding so required a dressing (still bleed occassionally). So now I am home and just trying to get by! My biggest worries / annoyances right now are that my face is numb around my nose, lips and chin. This worries me for the long run and think that is what is making it so hard for me to talk. I sound very odd when I talk and have a hard time enunciating properly. My swelling is also pretty bad. Right now, I am trying to ice and get liquids into me. I'm hoping this will all pass....
