How long did you have to wait before your surgery? Just curious. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure there was another similar topic about this in the last two months, so you might scroll back. I think consensus was that it depended on how much work there was to be done in straightening the teeth. My teeth were relatively straight already before I got braces, so I got braces Aug 13th and had surgery Dec 17th... but I think I'm definitely on the lowest of the low ends of the spectrum - my teeth were really in pretty good alignment before beginning.

I do realize that it can vary greatly, but I just wanted to see different people's experiences.
Thanks to those who have responded...please keep on replying.

I was told 9-12 months before surgery by my ortho, and 12-18months before surgery by my OS.
I am in month 9 right now and my ortho thinks the 12 month mark is still on. I am meeting with my OS on Monday to see what he thinks. I am having progress molds done on March 5.
I will be very interested in what the OS says, but if the idea is to have my bite as perfect as possible before surgery, my personal opinion is that it will definitely be longer than 12 months for me. My guess is more like 16-18 before I am ready. My 2nd molars are still very intruded and given that they are molars, might take a while to come up to level.
Rebelda~ Sounds like we might be in a similar timeframe. NIce to have buddies to go through this together.
freerideuk, kaycee, jayc~ What was/is the delay was for you?

I was originally told 6-9 months from my ortho's end, my OS didn't really give me an estimate. I am now in month 10 and I think we're close, so I think it may happen by the year mark. You should really check out my little elastic configuration I got going...yeah its a doozy! Well I'll definitely keep in touch with you and I hope you do too. Good luck with those molds in March!

Andantae:
About my delay - I needed to have four extractions prior to getting braced. Two of those teeth were baby teeth that never fell out because there was not an adult tooth to push them out. They were in the premolar position so needless to say they left pretty big gaps, about 10mm. After fourteen months in braces, the last gap is very close to being closed. I believe that some leveling needs to be done and then I should be ready.
Apparently my teeth move slower than average, which my orthodontist says will be a good thing once I'm in retainers.

Kaycee~
Wow, those were some big gaps to close. I can see why it might take a while.
Very interesting point your ortho makes about slower moving teeth and being a good thing once you are in retainers. Now there's a sliver lining for having slower moving teeth!
We might be around the same timeframe, too. (I also think we are the same age) Would love another buddy to keep in touch with

Andantae -
I see you are having progress molds done in March - I have an adjustment on Monday - I'll have to ask my OD if he does progress molds. I'd like to know a little better about where I am in the process, I mean technically, he just says "not yet" but I'd like to know exactly what needs to be done.
Right now he is thinking late June or early July for the surgery but he is not any more specific than that.

kaycee~ Good luck with the adjustment on Monday. I'll be curious what he/she says about progress molds.
Seriously~ Sounds like you might have an April/May date? Didn't you have progress molds done this week? How did it go?
BTW, I found out last week that my OS's schedule is completely booked through MAY, and his June calendar is already filling! Hopefully, after meeting with him on Monday I am far enough along that we can pick a semi-permanent date in June or after.
