Last night was my sleep study. My tech was totally professional so wouldn't tell me anything. I know we are supposed to wait for the results, but I thought that you guys could see if this resembled your study or if you had any other comments:
Being in a strange place and all, it took me awhile to fall asleep initially but I do remember snoring as I began drifting off (in that twilight zone of half awake, half sleep).
I woke up five times that I remember:
* One episode of "sleepwalking," although the technician says that I was awake. I remember nothing except standing at the door to the room, then climbing back into bed. (Yes, I ripped those electrode connections right outta the wall!) The facts that the light was off, I wasn't wearing my glasses, had no destination -- not even to the bathroom -- and I had emerged from bed without using the call button first so the electrodes could be disconnected indicate that even if I was technically "awake" I wasn't conscious of my actions.
* My own voice woke me up as I talked loudly in my sleep during a bizarre dream, which I have on a regular basis
* One bathrooom break
* Twice was awakened by loud talking in the hallway by a big-mouthed old man (patient next door) who was trying to hit on the young female technician
The only other memborable thing of note is that though a nasal cannula was inserted for oyxgen administration if necessary (this was a non-wake, non-CPAP study), it was taken out later. Half asleep, I asked the tech if it was obvious that I would NOT be needing any oxygen, and he answered yes, so I presume that if I had any apneic or hyponeic episodes they were not severe -- or at least not bad enough to warrant supplemental oxygen.
Your feedback would be most appreciated.

UARS?
After doing some further reading, I think that I may have UARS (upper airway resistance syndrome). The sleepwalking as well as lack of required supplemental oxygen certainly fit with that.
Arete Sleep Health conducted my study. Their website has a list of sleep disorders, and, while much attention is paid to apnea, UARS even isn't listed! (but resless leg syndrome is) That has me a little concerned....

Wrong type of study performed
UPDATE: Well I will have to undergo ANOTHER sleep study.
The ONE time I didn't do my homework, it came back to bite me. The study that was done at Arete did not check for UARS (that is separate, additional monitoring), only for apnea -- which I probably don't have, although I don't have the report yet.
I didn't know about UARS until AFTER I had the study so was unaware of this. I thought all sleep studies were the same and assumed that any sleep disturbances would be evident and any sleep disorders diagnosed from that study. Also, a large portion of the literature focuses on apnea, so that's what I (and my general practitioner) were fixated on.
Now I have to go back to a sleep center (a different one, as Arete does not even check for UARS! They are in the CPAP equipment rental business so are only interested in apnea. That explains why UARS is not even listed on their site.....) for another overnight stay.
The good news is that my insurance will most definitely cover the second one.
I hope that anyone needing a sleep study will remember this story. Maybe it will save them from having to go through it twice.
