I keep hearing during consults and reading in reports about something the OS/OD call the AP - Anterior Posterior relationship. Can anyone explain what this is? There is also a ton of other alphabet soup in the computer projections , ANS, PNS etc. If anyone can shed some light on this it would be great. I realize it is technical but it keeps coming up and I just don't have a clue what they are talking about.

rosy,

Welcome to the game of Medical Alphabet Soup!

AP (anterior/posterior) relationship refers to the relationship of the arches, front to back.

Class 1=proper relationship
Class 2=upper forward from lower, or lower backward from upper
Class 3=lower forward from upper, or upper backward from lower

That's it in a nutshell!

And, if you don't understand something your orthodontist or surgeon says, I sugggest simply looking at them in the eye, and saying, "I'm not familiar with that term. Could you explain to me what it means?"

After all, it is your mouth!

Be well, and at peace,

Phil

Thank you! the chart with the definitions does help. I've been given these diagrams with the acronynms but never any definitions.
