Hi Everyone! I'm new on here and not very good at knowing all the jargon so please bear with me! I'm in braces for the 2nd time in my life and have been recommended for surgery on both jaws. Thing is, my ortho told me there is something he may be able to do with pins on my top jaw to enable me to bite front teeth together when eating. This would not improve my appearance though.

I am left with the dilemma, should I go for the simplest option and accept that the way I look or should I put myself through surgery just to achieve a perfect result? Obviously having a decent bite is of prime importance to me, but finally having a decent jawline would be so lovely.

What would you recommend, people who have been through all the pain? Has anyone else heard of this 'pinning' thing?

Welcome, goldfish!

I am betting that Meryaten is right about the miniscrews. That was my first thought as to what he was referring to (even before I read her post).

Guess what? This is a wonderful opportunity in your life to improve your decision making skills, isn't it? There is a wealth of information here at AW, for starters. We've all done a lot of helping each other out, so don't ever feel like you are in this alone.

I would encourage you to ask your orthodontist lots of questions, and request specific answers--tell him/her that you want to know all of the technical jargon. Becoming familiar with all those terms will give you a place from which to begin to do your research, and ultimately make the best decision for you.

Once you've had conversations with a surgeon, you can begin to consider the possibility of surgery. You may want to consult with more than one. It's very interesting, that not all surgeons and orthodontists have the same philosophy for treatment, and while there may be similarities, you may discover one to be a better fit over the other.

I find making lists with "pros and cons" to be helpful when I am stuck on making a decision. Also, sometimes it can be helpful to just "step outside of yourself" and view your situation from a distance, looking at yourself and other important people in your world. Then "step back in" and see how you feel different!

Just my two cents!

And we're here for you!

Be well, and at peace,

Phil
