I am a 32 year old female who had braces in high school and jaw surgery. I didn't wear retainer or seen my orthodontist (because his practice moved further away) and neglected to find another one. Now I am 32 years old and my teeth shifted to an overbite and crooked teeth. I went to four consultations.

This is one of the orthodontist findings:
shorter lower jaw compared to upper jaw
Excessive lower lip curl at rest
upper teeth are too far in front of lower teeth
Mild lower crowding 2mm
moderate upper crowding 4mm
Moderate protusion of upper front teeth
Lower front teeth are right of center

2 of the orthodontist said I need to have jaw surgery again!!! I don't want jaw surgery again. I have decided to to go with the surgery.

Now I have another delima one ortho says extractions another says no. What should I do who should I go to??

Hi,

I also had a relapes. I have an open bite had braces & upper jaw surgery when I was 13 yrs old. I think that maybe I was to young to have the jaw surgery because later on my wisdom teeth grew in and my mouth did change again.

Back then they had used wires (now they use screws & plates) that also could have been why I relaped or the tongue thrusting? Anyway everything was fine for long time up untill 4 yrs ago: speech issues, dry mouth, chewing, the stain to keep my lips close, I was told that I would need braces & surgery again and not just upper jaw surgery but could also be lower jaw surgery  . I was not happy about this at all! I did not want to go though this all over again at the age of 48 yrs old!! My open bite is 5mm so it's pretty big & I'm worried of having even more problems later.

When I was a kid it was no big deal I just did what my parents decided for me but now making the decision and having surgery is so much more difficult - talk about anxiety. The surgery does worry me and seems to be always on my mind but this message board is so very helpful!

I'm doing it again been in braces for 1 months now. I was told by one Ortho that braces alone could correct my bite but I seek out another opin was told my bite is very open that I would need surgery ( I needed surgery the first time). I think if your bite is not that bad that maybe braces alone could help w\ elastics.

So I guess it's your dession & how much your bite is bothering you.

I was thinking of starting my braces treatment with an orthodontist and see if that does correct my teeth overbite if it doesn't then along the treatment go to surgery consultation. Starting braces sooner will end my treatment sooner. What do you think of that idea.

You might want to see a Maxillofacial \ Orthognathic surgeon anyway before the braces just in case you do need surgery so it will be approved to make sure your insurance covers it.

A Orthognathic sugeon could tell you a little more regarding surgery. Always good to have more info.
