How do you keep your mouth clean when wired shut?

#1 Post by mrsiphu »

Well, I had my second BSSO jaw surgery on last week to correct an original Class III underbite. I had relapse from my first surgery (BSSO/LF1) in August. This time, my surgeon has wired me shut for 6 weeks (as opposed to rubber bands before). How do I keep the inside of my mouth clean? After 10 days now, it feels like a trash can inside. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Lots of rinsing. See this recent thread:

I feel for you. I was wired shut but only for 10 days and I just could not stand that nasty feeling in my mouth.

Rinse with salt water, rinse with the mouthwash they gave you-or should have- peridex. Try to brush as best you can and I usually let the toothpaste sit for a few minutes afterwards.

You can also take the saltwater and squirt it through your tube that you are eating through. That helped me try to get the backside of the teeth sort of clean.

Be prepared when the wires come off. It is nasty. After eating liquid I have no idea how you end up with all kinds of gunk on your teeth.

This was something that I hated. I am already crazy about the hygiene of my teeth. After surgery I was told to gargle with a 50/50 saline and peroxide rinse 3 times a day. I did this and brushed after every meal.
