#1 Post by changes09 »

Looking at a lot of before and after pictures of those who have had upper surgery (i will be getting both upper and lower) I notcied that most of them after surgery have a pig nose.....The nose gets wider at the tip and also points up thus looking like a pig.....I was wondering how much will a persons nose chnange when getting upper jaw surgery?

Hmmm....I'm not sure how to answer that one. I think a lot of factors play a role.
How long has it been since those people had surgery? Were they still swollen? Did they have work on their noses as well? Some of us are/have been mouth breathers and swelling around the nose can stay around for a long time. People can be quick to put up youtube pics as they are excited that surgery and the worst is over, yet they are still a bit swollen.

I can only speak from my personal experience. I had both upper and lower jaw surgery as well as turbinectomies/partial septoplasty on my nose. I wasn't unhappy with the way my nose looked before but the shape did change from surgery, and I happen to like the way it looks now. Yes, it is wider and slightly turned up but the most important thing is that I can breathe through it for the first time in my life. I don't think I look like a pig however, some people who have seen me recently have told me that it is much more settled in my face than it was the first few weeks after surgery. Most of my swelling that remains is around my nose and the cheek area near my nose.

Just make your surgeon aware of your concerns.
Best wishes,
OM

Wider - Swollen Nose

#5 Post by Cali Girl »

OzzysMom,

Thanks. I like the way you put that. I'm 2 weeks post op and I noticed that my nose has changed a little bit too. I think it's still swollen by the nose and cheek area. Everything is still very tight. Though I hope everythig looks more normal in time. Right now I'm still getting used to the change. I must agree with you that I can breath a lot better through my nose. I was always a mouth breather. I didn't get the surgery done because of that, but good outcome with the breathing.
