New to board - chin pain 12 days post op

#1 Post by dlb513 »

Hi all,
I have found the message board to be such a blessing a resource. I received my braces Dec 07, and finally had my lower jaw advancement March 10, 09. Many ups and downs along the way.

The surgery went well, but I seem to have one problem. Each day I progressively felt better and achieved more feeling in my face until about day 7 - and now I just have a constant pain in my chin, but the chin is totally numb. I am thinking that it is the nerve ending trying to repair, but the pain is almost unbearable and I need to go back to work after 2 weeks off.

Anyone experience this? Know of a OTC pain reliever that would calm down the pain? I see my surgeon again tomorrow, just wondering if anyone else has had this experince.

Thanks for your help!

Hi there--

I had this exact same thing happen about 12 days post-op. If I remember correctly, my surgeon thought it was because I was straining against my bands too much while trying to "talk" and that the sudden onset was a sign of the nerves in this area reawakening. I was driven to taking my prescription pain meds again for a couple days to deal with it. But I seem to remember that it did go away after a couple of days.

Best of luck.

Thanks Jenn.

This has been going on for a week now, without relief. I have to be back at work tomorrow and I'm very concerned. Advil just doesn't manage the pain.

My surgeon actually has me doing jaw exercises, maybe that's causing the burning sensation as well? I'm confused, but I will be seeing him this evening to see if there is anything more I can do.

Again, thanks for your help.
