upper jaw advancement

#1 Post by JamieMei »

Hi guys,

I have an underbite, and I thought I was going to get my bottom jaw moved back and my top jaw moved forward, but my oral surgeon opted for moving the top jaw only. Is there anyone else out there who has fixed their underbite by moving the top jaw only? What did you guys think?

Thanks guys

Hi Jamie,

I am in the same boat as you are. I went to see a maxiofacial surgeon said he would advance my upper jaw because if you bring the bottom jaw back in a male you would loose alot masculinity. Also if your mid face moving the upper jaw forward would be a better option.

Because my malocclusion is about 3mm which makes it an edge-to-edge bite I finally found an orthodontist who said theycould corrects my bite with braces and rubber bands only.

I haven't had surgery yet, but my surgeon is moving my top jaw only to correct my underbite.

I'll be having upper jaw and a genio (the genio being more for cosmetic reasons) to correct my underbite. From what my surgeon told me surgery on the upper is far less of a big deal than the lower, and is less likely to result in permanent numbness. So not having to have any work done on your lower is definitely something to be pleased about :)

Thanks =)

I'm a girl, so I feel like it is better to have a 'softer' lower jaw, but my surgeon also told me that operating on the lower jaw is more likely to result in complications involving numbness. Thanks for your input guys =)

I also had planned a two jaw surgery, but in the end, they are moving only the upper one, yay!
