dark circles/bags under your eyes

#1 Post by willowisp »

Hi, I have dark circles/bags under my eyes most of the time and I was just wondering if the surgery I'm having to bring my upper jaw forwards will affect them?

Any thoughts or experiences would help.

I have the same problem. It didn't go away with an 8mm maxillary advancement. The problem is likely your sinuses and advancing the maxilla won't compensate for it.

Dark circles under the eyes can be a sign of adrenal fatigue.

Adrenal fatigue isn't a medically recognized ailment.

Doesn't mean it's not real. Western medicine isn't the only way.

It doesn't mean that it's not real. It means that it's not provable that it exists. If it's not proven to exist we really can't place blame on it yet.

In older medical journals I used to see a condition called "allergic facies" and articles would show faces with dark circles and baggy eyes, also showing receding chins and Class II malocclusion. I first came across this terminology in the 1970's.

Google "allergic facies" and you will see a lot that sounds familiar:
"...chronic mouth breathing from nasal obstruction can cause allergic facies...open mouth with receding chin...narrow and high arched palate...overbite..."
Many entries here.

fromjersey is right to suggest that allergies can disturb the normal development of the face. However, correcting those skeletal problems doesn't guarantee that the dark circles will be eliminated. My case is a perfect example of that. Also, with lifelong allergies chronic allergic rhinosinusitis is likely. So, after your jaw surgery an ENT consult wouldn't hurt.

Right. Underlying problems would need to be addressed.

I have very bad dark circles under my eyes also and have wondered the same thing.

It would be great if an upper advancement would help with this problem.

dark circles can be from underbite/ small airway

#14 Post by Nora Elizabeth »

Hi Willow-
In response to your question re: dark under eye circles--- I went to one of the most prominent jaw surgeons in the country-
and during my consultation he said that the dark circles under my eyes were due to a restricted airway due to a recessed lower jaw. He estimated that about a year after surgery much of the discoloration under my eyes should heal---it is due to lack of oxygen.
Hope this helps----
