does anyone know of a ortodontist in the north that will give me braces and do maxillofacial surgery please pm me because i went up to one in newry and they told me they dont know of any surgeons that do surgery private. its a pain in the arse i went up to the north to get work done and the ortho that i went to said no problem we can fix your teeth but that she did not know of one in the north but she knew of ones down in the south but then i got a letter saying she cant do any work on my teeth , im pissed off went all the way to n ireland paid a 100euro and sesame to that they could do the work and then its a slap in the face NO. sorry for ranting but i need help the republic of rip off is to much for me as well.

Can you go to your dentist and ask for a referral? They must know someone in your area that works privately, surely! And if your jaws are bad enough would you perhaps qualify for public healthcare anyway? (I'm afraid I don't know how similar or different it is from the NHS! Sorry for the ignorance )

If you are prepared to go to England/Scotland - you will have a choice of excellent surgeons - you know the cost of an Easyjet flight may be less than the cost to travel up North in any case?

i asked them for a referal and they said they would but that they still cant do the orthodontist work there are plenty of maxillofacial surgeons in the south and i dont think the price is much different but getting braces are about two and a half grand cheaper up the north then the south. i dont see why they cant do the ortho work up there and send me down the south for the surgery anyway i only got the letter off them thursdayso ill ring back again on monday just hope i dont get the secatery again.

I think the reason is that the orthodontist and surgeon has to work very closely together - as part a team. My daughter had to have her surgery repeated (it was done first time in Northern Ireland!) Anyway, she had the second surgery in Scotland and she had to move orthodontist as well as the surgeon could not work with an orthodontist in another region - they need to work together for a good result. My advice to you is to have ALL of your treatment - brace work and surgery in England or Scotland - there are a much wider choice of surgeons to choose from especially if you are going to be paying in any case. I would not recommend having it done in Northern Ireland - but that's because we had such a bad experience, so maybe not fair for me to advise you! Take care and God bless.

Hi OP just wanted to know if you came up with anything as I`m in the same situation. Live in Dundalk but can`t find any recommendations for orthodontists in North or South and don`t have a dentist to get a referral. Want someone good but also worried about being able to afford it not sure VHI covers. Did you look at the dental schools dublin and belfast?

Anyway if you come up with any info let me know and I`ll do likewise!

I'm from Northern Ireland myself and am currently due for double jaw surgery. My operation is done by the Ulster Hospital via the NHS. When I first enquiried about this a good few years ago, I was told that no one can do this privately in NI. The surgeon doing my surgery is Dr Ramsey-Baggs. The orthodontic side of things is handled via the School of Dentistry at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast (its a joint venture between the two hospitals).
