Hi...

I wanted to post this message under a more positive subject heading to mark a turning point and to thank you all for your kind thoughts and prayers and interest in our journey towards this outcome.

My daughter was debanded last week and her teeth are really beautiful. When I look back at the photographs after the first surgery, I just can't believe the difference - we are so thankful and delighted that we found our second surgeon - who has done a truly amazing job.

She still has some swelling in her cheeks, and in the upper lip area where the scar tissue has not healed yet. but honestly to see her smiling again is just a wonderful wonderful blessing.

I hope to be able to post some photographs when she's ready - to be honest, she's still recovering emotionally from the trauma of it all, but it is truly amazing to see the difference in her confidence even in the few days since those braces came off!!

Thank you all for all your support and I will continue to keep you posted and to keep up with the message board as I know what a great resource and support it is and we want to be able to offer that support to others.

I am so happy to hear that, Jane! This journey is emotionally taxing even without all the problems your daughter went through. I can only imagine how happy she must be and hope that I also gain more confidence once my braces come off.

This post has made my day. I'm so excited for your daughter and am so happy this story has a happy ending. Many parents (and patients) would have said it is too hard to "fix this". All of you have a very strong will, and you are to be commended for your hard work and dedication to make it right in the end.

Thankyou all so much for your kind words - at times we wondered if we would get to this point and be able to look forward with optimism - I'm truly delighted to report that when things go wrong, or when there are unanticipated outcomes (as sometimes happens) if you take action and are determined they can be put right.

Just to reassure all those waiting for surgery...we were told by our second surgeon that orthognathic surgery is not difficult - but the key to a successful outcome lies in the planning and in ensuring that the planned movements are carried out (nothing more nothing less). The problems occur when for some reason a surgeon does something that hasn't been planned, or when he/she starts to use guess-work during surgery - that is when disasters happen (we think that is what happend with my daughter's surgery - but since the surgeon retired after the surgery we'll never know!) So my advice to all of you preparing for this surgery is to ask exactly what is going to happen, find out why it is the best option, and make sure you understand exactly what will be achieved. Then after the surgery you need to ask if it went exactly to plan!

Since posting our experience on this board, we've learned of 2 other young people who've had similar experiences, and who just didn't know where to turn. I just pray that this story will give them and any others for whom things might not turn out right, the determination to pursue a successful outcome - there are many, many brilliant surgeons and orthodontists out there who have their patients' best interests at heart (these are the majority) and I thank God we found one.

I read your initial posts and my heart went out to you and your daughter. I am very happy and relived for you and your daughter. I know you're relieved because it's hard when a loved one is suffering. I'm glad everything is done and that your daughter looks beautiful!

I agree about what you said when the initial team did not admit that something went wrong; It seems as though they try to make it sound like you're the one being picky or make it seem like it's not as bad as you're making it out to be.
