Hi, have been reading this forum for some time now, but have only just registered!
I'm scheduled to have my lower jaw surgery this Monday, after what feels like too many years in and out of braces...and am getting slightly nervous as it's only a day away tomorrow. I feel as if my surgeon and orthodontist have barely given me any information, but as I understand mine is quite a straight forward case however I still feel completely unprepared.

Anyway, just wanted to say hello to everyone, and good luck to everyone who is having surgery in January!

As you can see from my number of posts, I'm new here too. My surgery was just 2 days ago. I had both my upper and lower jaw corrected, and I can tell you that there really isn't much to be nervous about, especially since you're only having your lower jaw done. The best advice I can give is to just remain positive. My team of surgeons and nurses were amazed at how well I was coping in just 2 days. Expect that there will be plenty of discomfort, but keep your mind on other things, especially when the meds start making you feel down.

I had lower jaw surgery 3.5 weeks ago. Mine went smoothly from what I can tell, yet I still had my moments.

I'm sorry to hear that they didn't give you any information prior to the surgery. Please feel free to ask questions here, or use the search feature as there are many people on this forum that have gone through it.

Thank you for all your replies. Well I'm packed and going to try and have an early night since I have to be at the hospital so early in the morning!

I should be discharged on Wednesday or Thursday, so hopefully I'll be able to come back and post how well it all went.

Hi everyone, well I'm back, and just wanted to say that it seems to have gone well! At least my surgeon and orthodontist seem happy with my results.

I'm not really in much pain, just quite bruised and swollen which is to be expected. I had a splint in straight after surgery, and I am sure someone came to visit me and told me that I would have it in for around two weeks, but then they ended up removing it the next day...perhaps I was a bit out of it. I had a check up yesterday and was told that they wouldn't be giving me elastics, which again I was slightly surprised about.

I'm just concerned about there being a relapse, so I feel as if I am constantly checking to make sure that everything is still in the correct place!

I'm 'just out' too and didn't have splints or elastics. My surgeon just told me to be careful with what I'm eating and not get too carried away (it's not like I'm able to tuck into a baguette any time soon, so he needn't worry about that ). Because they use metal screws to hold everything in place, everything is quite stable. The bands, etc, are just extra precautions
