JAW SURGERY! Anyone from Canada??

#1 Post by jawsurgerynb »

So I'm considering jaw surgery since my consultation with an orthodontist and he said I would need Le Fort I, I would need upper jaw surgery and possibly lower. I was told I had a case of long face syndrome, where I have lip incompetence, a gummy smile (well kinda).
I've had braces before when I was younger, I am now 20. My question is can the braces be put on a week before my jaw surgery since I already have straight teeth. Has anyone ever been allowed to do this?
And HOW MUCH WAS THE COST FOR JAW SURGERY? I'm from ONTARIO, CANADA so I have OHIP.
Also, my consultation with an Oral Surgeon is coming up soon, they told me the fee was 310! I almost passed out lol. Why is it so much????

I am in Canada (Calgary) and am covered by Alberta Health Care.

In response to your questions:

1) It's unlikely to get your braces only a week before surgery. Even though you say your teeth are straight, your arches may not line up correctly to give you a proper bite. You will probably be in braces for a while before your surgery (it wouldn't be unusual for it to take a year). You should ask your orthodontist about the time-frame. Also, make sure you ask how long the provincial waitlist is for jaw surgery. My ortho told me I would be ready in 10-16 months (I could have had surgery at 12 months), but the waitlist here is almost 2 years.

2) My surgery is costing me $3000, as I am having both jaws done. It would have been $2000 for one jaw. This is over and above what AHC covers. I won't have to pay anything else.

3) My consultation fee was $190.00 and I haven't had to pay for any of the additional appointments I've had with him.

Hope that helps.

Hey! I guess only one of my answers is relevant, haha... I did not have braces of any sort until after my surgery. My teeth were straight and apparently my arch lined up, so I got the first braces I've ever had while I was still asleep on the operating table.

You can have braces before surgery if your ortho and maxo surgeon agree as part of your treatment. After surgery probably 6-8wks before you can get braced again. I think ortho and jaw surgery work hand in hand... ortho refine the teeth position in the new jaw position. Goodluck! Wonderbite

I'm in Vancouver--cost for consult was $300. Surgeons fee is $4500 for BSSO --rest is covered by BC health, only I have private US insurance--so I am not really sure what my cost will be- the office didn't understand that at first and assumed I had BC health and quoted me that price!!

good luck!

I'm in ontario and the extra charges associated with my surgery is about $2500. - which was covered by employee dental benefits. My pre-op CT scan and records weren't covered at all for some reason. ($300)

I live in Vancouver, BC. After the search for a "right" ortho surgeon to do the surgery. I have a few tips for you.

Ortho surgeons vary enormously in the fees they charge. So make sure you search online first and read their profiles. For instance, I was first referred to a surgeon who tried to charge me $10600 for my double-jaw surgery. Then I went online and did the research myself, and I find Dr.Macdonald. I read his profile, he is also a professor at University of British Columbia (the school that I attend, hehe). So I went to Dr.Macdonald, it turns out the same surgery only costs me $5600.

SO IMPORTANT NOTE ! Find a doctor with some merits, cause there are doctors who are only out there for the money.!!!!

Hi Audra,
I too live in Calgary and I have overbite problem. I was told by my dentist to see an orthodontist for surgery. I didn't see him/her because I have only Alberta Health Care not Employer's extended Health Care. I thought it costs much more than that and I have to pay for it by myself. Beacuse of money problem I have postponed it. Please tell me how did you get this done? Who was your orthodontist? How to claim it? Many many thanks.....

There are many orthodontists in Calgary. Mine is pretty expensive. His name is Dr. Wally Dhol. He just brought on a partner named Dr. Ward. Several orthodontists deal with surgical patients though.

Alberta Health Care covers all of the hospital costs. Most oral surgeons charge an extra billing fee though to cover the time required to do the workup on the models etc. as it is time intensive. My surgeon (Dr. Carl Young) charges $2000 if you only need one jaw done and $3000 if you need both done. Other than the $190 initial consult fee, that's the extent of my payments - other than the cost of braces, of course.

In Alberta, you don't "claim" anything. You go to the hospital, show your Alberta Health card and that's it.

Thank you so much Audra for your informative reply.

I haven't gone to hospital for dental services in my entire life. So I don't have a clue about it.

As a first step I see an orthodontist. What happens after that? Which hospital do I go?

Thank you so much again.......

You first see an orthodontist. If he feels you are a surgical case, he will refer you to an oral surgeon, which you will see either before or after your braces are on. I saw the oral surgeon a month after my braces were on. Waitlists in Alberta for surgery are around 2 years, so even if you are ready for surgery in a year (like I was) you will be waiting for a long time for the surgery. The hospital you go to is determined by your surgeon and where he operates. Most "dental" survices are not covered by Alberta Health Care. Wisdom teeth removal is not. But this is major surgery and has to be done in a hospital, which is why Alberta Health Care covers it.

Kinda old thread but I thought I'd post something for people searching for information anyways...

I got my SARPE done in Vancouver, UBC hospital by Dr. Kenneth Chow and costed me only $1500 and that was all the required moldings, x-rays, pictures and administrative fees/surgeon fees etc. The entire operation and any required hospital stays will covered by MSP which is our medical health plan here in British Columbia.

Hey, I am from Toronto myself, I was wondering which surgeons you have seen so far as I am also considering jaw surgery. Let me know if you want to discuss. I am in my 20s as well.
