Question for people who's mouths were closed shut

For a lengthy time, just wondering what kind of stuff did you drink for meals? I'm going to be wired shut 4-6 weeks.

Well, I'm going on 4 weeks completely closed, so I can definitely weigh in here!

Soup, soup, soup. That's an understatement. Broths, creamy soups blended and strained, chicken noodle soup blended and strained, tomato soup, veggie soup blended and strained, basically any soup blended and strained!

Boost and Ensure; lots of these too.

I make a milkshake that I really like with soy milk or regular milk, cocoa, honey, protein powder, bit of vanilla and a scoop of almond butter (or peanut butter.) YUM!

Juices. I have a juicer, and make lots of juice with carrots, celery, apples, plums, and canteloupe. I then throw some vanilla protein powder in there too to up the protein.

My favorite meal so far has been instant mashed potatoes mixed with milk, a scoop of sour cream and some gravy, blended to death and syringed into my mouth! It's great for adding on calories!
Hope this helps!

Hi James009,
yes canned soups are ok but I liquidfied EVERYTHING. Just add a chicken, vegetable or beef broth to anything and VOILA! I literally had scrambled eggs, turkey with stuffing, chicken parm dinners, steak. If you have a great blender there is no need to get stuck with canned soups. I got sick of both soups and ensure. I endulged every now and again with a simple lobster bisque recipe that had 785 calories. It was delicious and filling. I had no problem with my weight, going up or down, as I very very conscientious of what I was eating. I joked and said I never ate so good as to when I was banded shut-I couldn't fit any cookies or candy inside my mouth-lol. Even when I was banded shut I was able to progress from a syringe to drinking all of my concoctions from a mug. I would always eat in my bathroom, in front of a mirror because I couldn't feel if I dribbled any on my chin! Great wishes and prayers.

I learned during 4 weeks of being banded shut and eating through a syringe, that you can blend ANYTHING if you really want to.

For shakes I stuck with meal replacement shakes like Muscle Milk made with whole milk with frozen fruit added and sometimes some ice cream. I could not handle the sweetness of Ensure. It made me feel sick to my stomach.

I blended a lot of soups. Liquid yogurt works well.

For meals when I was tired of soup, yogurt, blended fruit, etc. I would get my husband to pick up food for me on the way home.

I ate Swiss Chalet (rotisserie chicken restaurant) chicken pie (with the crust on) blended with some gravy and chicken broth. Their chicken soup blended nicely too. Tim Horton's chili blended well with no added liquid. But probably beef broth in chili would work best. I also had indian food - butter chicken with lots of the sauce and I even added some rice. You can use just water to blend or some coconut milk works too. Desserts blend well. I had banana cream pie, tiramisu, strawberry shortcake. Just use milk to blend. Shepherd's pie works great with some beef broth.

And the weekend before I got the splint out I blended a burger. Not McDonalds - a real burger from a restaurant. If you do this, BLEND WELL. I didn't add enough liquid and when I was initially trying to get it through the syring, I was not really paying attention to the fact that the plunger on the syringe was not going down. So, I pressed harder. The pressure blew the end of the syringe off and I ended up with blended burger on my face, in my hair, on the wall, on my husband (on the next couch over), on the drapes, on the blinds, on the carpet etc. So I cleaned up, then blended it again with more beef broth and it worked great.

I know a women whose husbanded made real meals every night and they blended them up for her. She had pasta, and pizza and everything they might normally eat.

Blended food looks gross. But it tastes the same as it would if it wasn't blended. You just have to get over what it looks like in the glass.

I had double jaw surgery 13 days ago. I wonder why some people do not need their jaws wired shut for the 6 week recovery period.

I have a feeling mine will be wired shut for 6 full weeks instead of having rubber bands after a while. I hope my doctor will do something 2 days from now...

I am so sick of eating blended food and soups. Food keeps getting stuck in my mouth and I need to rinse my mouth 1/2 way during my meal.

I was only wired shut for 9 days. I drank ensure protein shakes for calories. I drank mango juice for sweetness cravings and calories. Finally I drank hot chicken broth which someone could buy from the local vietnamese pho place in large batches, and that satisfied my salt cravings. I basically just cycled through those to satisfy cravings as needed. I remember being way too over-prepared for a long stint in wires, and it turned out to go by a lot quicker than expected, I never even used a blender.
