I have finally gotten approval of my orthognathic surgery for my under-bite, open-bite, and mandibular bilateral cross-bite. However, the next step is now getting braces, and I fear that I will not be able to pay for the down payment on braces and get them on for another two months. In addition, my surgeon and orthodontist both expect me to only be ready a year and a half after I first get the braces on. Which means I'm almost looking at two years! Completely dreadful. I just don't know If I can wait that long.
How long did it take you guys to get the surgery once you had braces on, and HOW did you pass the time? I feel like I'm going to go crazy until I get the surgery complete.
Patience seems near impossible...

How long with braces before surgery
Every case is different. I have had braces since April of 2009 and my orthodontist thinks i will be ready for surgery in September. But the thing is that once the orthodontist gives the go ahead , it takes at least 2-5 months before you can have the actual surgery performed since you need approval from your insurance(which takes a while) and it has to fit in with your surgeon's and your schedule. Well known surgeons in big cities are usually booked 2-3 months in advance and operating rooms are also booked well in advance in some big hospitals.
In my case for example, even though i might be ready for surgery in early September, i can only get it done in December since i am in school. There have been other cases like mine here.

I had insurance approval for my surgery before I got my braces. Due to my regimented schedule (professor), I had a window of summer time to get my surgery. Because of this, I may have gotten my surgery a *little* earlier than the orthodontist may have wanted but who nows. With all that said, I had my surgery 8 months after being braced. My teeth were pretty straight from the beginning and straightened out very quickly. I think I'm one of the lucky ones for sure on timing though.
Good luck on getting the money together! The journey is well worth it.

I've got to wait 2 years as well. That is:
- 2 years braces, and somewhere along the line I have upper jaw surgery (bringing my jaw forward and down)
- 2 years retention after that... which relates to making sure my teeth and jaw don't go back to their original, poorly-grown positions.
I'm 6 months into it now... and I wish it was going faster too, but just don't think about it so much because let's face it we have no choice but to wait. And, good things come to those who wait. In fact, the things in life I enjoyed the most are the things I put a LOT of time into (I'm talking about personal projects of mine which have taken 9+ months of work). At least with braces we don't have to do much effort except working for the money to pay them off.
Anyway, a winning smile will not only give anyone great confidence but will also "win" the hearts of many hotties. muwahahahaha
lol I CAN'T WAIT LOL so yeah I think i'll focus on getting my body into shape while my braces do all the work, and my other time is spent working hard for $$
