Hi, I am having my upper jaw worked on August 5. I am starting a new school and just got accepted in a teacher education program that I wanted to get into. They are having a registration day August 13, 8 days later. It is from 9-1:30. Is there any way that I would be able to go? How I am going to be feeling? I really want to go!! Thanks in advance!

I really don't think you're going to feel up to it.

I had upper jaw surgery back in May - Maxillary advancement and SARPE. While everybody recovers differently it took me about a week to feel normal again and 'social.' That first week I spent quite a bit of that time eating soup and using heat packs for the swelling. It then took another two weeks for the swelling to go down and the black eye to disappear. I know that some folks on this forum had far less swelling while others had more. I really hope you are in the latter category but you won't know that until the week after the surgery. If you are worried talk to your surgeon and see what they say. Good luck.

Can someone drive you and hang out with you? I was barely starting to feel human at 8 days. It was still hard to focus on anything other than my giantly numb face. Personally, I wouldn't have been able to go out, the main reason being I looked like a monster and couldn't speak clearly at all. And I was still constantly tired. But if you really want to go and have someone to accompany you, it should be technically possible. You'll probably know the night before.

I had double jaw surgery and attended my univsersity registration event 7 days later. Although I was physically up for it apart from being tired, psychologically it was too much for me. I was really swollen and puffy, and was very self conscious about my bruises. I knew people were openly staring at me and even as a very confident person this affected me a lot and I went home after an hour. If it had been an event with people I knew it would not have been a problem but it was all the strangers eyeing me up that affected me, and knowing that Icouldn'tspeakclearly enough to explain what had happened

So, I went to the oral surgeon yesturday and he moved my surgery up 2 days, because of some conflict. So, now my school registration will be 10 days later, so I am hoping I will feel okay to go!!

There's really not that much difference between 8 and 10 days. But if you have the balls to go, keep us posted so we know how it went.

I had a master's student defend his thesis 6 days after surgery. I told my surgeon and he gave me an additional medication to help with the swelling (maybe a steroid?). I went and, because it was only 2 hours and I didn't have to do much of the talking, it went absolutely fine. I wasn't so puffy that people cringed at me or anything and mentally I was fine. I had both upper and lower jaw surgery but no splint or bands keeping me shut. I think it's possible, just be sure to let your surgeon know and ask his advice as well.
