How long before you can open your mouth 100% after debanding

#1 Post by vincejawsurgery »

I had my wires debanded last Thursday, 4 days ago, after having my teeth wired shut for 5 weeks +.

I can't open my mouth very wide at the moment. I can only make less than an inch of space in between my teeth right now.

How long did it take for you to regain the full motion of your jaws after debanding?

Eating is still a struggle for me and I find myself "slurping" a lot just to get my food into my mouth. No matter what, this is still better than the previous 5 weeks!

I am 12 weeks post op and can open my mouth about 30mm which is about 2 fingers. My surgeon wants my jaw to open 40mm which is about 3 fingers. I am doing exercises but he said it will probably take another 2 - 3 months to get full range of motion.

Wow! That is quite a long time! I guess I need to be very patient. Thanks for the info.

I was told to put my thumbs on my upper teeth and my index fingers on my lower teeth and hold my mouth open as wide as I can for 10 minutes and to do this twice a day. I have been doing it for 3 weeks and have gotten 5mm more.
