Hi,
im 5 weeks post surgery and have developed ulcers or sores caused by the braces...i have zigzagelastics and have had to remove these for a couple of days as they were causing me to bite down on the ulcers - ouch.
So i got an ulcer spray which seemed to numb the pain, but they still seem to be hanging around the inside of my mouth, and also seem to get worse during nightime. Im hygenic with my teeth and brush regularly so imsure its not an infection.
Im back wearing elastics as obviously i dont want to leave them off for too long.
Anyone have any advice on how I can deal with this. Its casuing my face to swell up,which i dont want as I want to be going forwards with recovery, not backwards!!

There are many product that you can use to prevent the sore and ulcer for hurting. The one I use is Zilactin. It make a thin film over the ulcer thus protecting it from anything that might touch it and removing pain. But applying will cause pain for a couple of seconds.

Are you using the ortho wax to cover up the areas that are rubbing? That's the only thing that helped me post op. Can you place it where the irritation is? The ulcers heal fast once the irritation stops.

i had used ortho wax before but because of the location of the ulcer i just found it really awkward, kept drooling everywhere (sorry, tmi

) trying to affix it to the brace. But thanks for reminding me anyway, because id forgotten to try that as an option, was using bonjela but this pain is so bad it wakes me up at night. Will give the wax another go

A dentist once told my daughter to swish with 1/2 benedryl and 1/2 malox(sp). IT will burn at first but they should heal faster.

I think using wax to smooth over the wires and warm salt water rinses should do the trick. You'll probably feel better almost immediately!
Prescription Toothpaste

I would recommend asking your orthodontist for a prescription toothpaste that you can only get at your dentist office or orthodontist. I have had issues with mouth ulcers prior to braces, and have been told multiple times that there is some ingredient in daily toothpaste that can cause these ulcers to continue to be irritated. I believe the toothpaste I have is called PreviDent.

Thanks for all your replies..ive tried all suggestions!! (apart from the toothpaste tip) and the ulcers just seem to be coming and going, really annoying as i find i cant bear to wear my my elastics with them as they just keep my mouth clamped close on the ulcers, they are in an awkward site aswell (right at the back and poking between my jaw joints ,on the left sider especially, small ulcer on hte right side,so im constantly biting down on them)
NEver banked on ulcers interfering with my recovery and progress!
