Open incision 7 weeks post-op

I'm not sure how this has happened but I have an incision that hasn't closed or has gotten reopened somehow. I noticed it on Sunday night so went to my local hospital and a maxfac doctor took a look and said it was superficial and no sign of infection. He said it should heal up on its own in the next few days but was very delicate so easy to tear.

Ive been using Corsidol and doing salt rinses but nothing has changed. I got an infection which had to be drained in week 3 so wondering if where they cut open the gum its never truly healed.

Has anyone had trouble with incisions healing?

I've had this problem, but not at 7 weeks. In fact, I had this issue last week. My OS cauterized the incision to stop the bleeding as it was one part of the incision kind of where the cheek and gum intersect. That only held a day or so, and then it broke off and started bleeding again, although not nearly as much. It seems to have healed the last day or so.

Mouth incisions, relative to other parts of the body, generally heal quite quickly. Although, I have had oral incisions "bust open" on more than one occasion. It has typically happened 10 to 14 days afterwards for me.

7 weeks is a LONG time and I'm not sure why you wouldn't be healed by then. The only advice I have is to be very, very careful...even with the rinses. Also, use salt water and DO NOT use peroxide, as peroxide actually prevents clotting.

You may want to see a general doctor about this to get their opinion as to why a wound would bleed 7 weeks later.

Good Luck

Thanks Chicago29 your replies are helpful as ever :-)

Ouch being cauterised hurts from memory of having it done as a kid but I guess you are numb so can't feel anything?

Well it's strange because it isn't bleeding, I only noticed because I had a stinging sensation after eating which obviously was it being irritated. It's exactly where you had yours too right at the back where the cheek meets the gum by back molar.

If it hasn't closed up by Friday I'm definitely going back to the hospital. The consultant didn't seem concerned on Sunday night but its worrying that he couldn't explain this.

The only thing I can think that might of caused it though the consultant didn't think so is I've been puffing my cheeks out as I'm continually biting on my cheeks. I may have puffed too hard and bust open the would from the draining which was 3 weeks ago so could make sense. Hmm?

How is your recovery going? I've not used peroxide I'm not sure how I would anyway? Would I use the developer I dye my copper hair with lol? Salt rinses all the way. I've also been using gengigel which promotes soft tissue healing. Will keep you updated.

Apologies for the typos by the way I use my phone mostly so the predictive text has a mind of its own!
