still conscious about my bite after surgery

#1 Post by cocomecrazy »

Anyone here thought they're supposed to have double/SARP, but just had lower jaw surgery?

When my mom told me that I look the same, I literally cried.

So here's my case. I had a cross bite (one jaw was longer than the other) and an under bite. And to correct my bite, my surgeon just moved my lower jaw back (one side 3mm, the other 5mm).

BUT the first surgeon I was supposed to have (about 2/3 years ago when I was 17) double surgery. I remember he said he's going to move and expand my maxilla, and move back my mandible. And even my orthodontist assumed I was gonna have double surgery.

But I only had lower surgery and this was on Oct 14, 2010. I already told all my concerns to my surgeon. These were the stuff that I told her:

1. My upper teeth are still off. Like the distance between my left molars and the middle of the roof of my mouth is greater than the distance between my right molars and the middle of the roof my mouth -will that affect the recovery and result into a crossbite kinda relapse. And also my front teeth are leaning out to the left.

She said, it wouldn't.

2. I was born with a small maxilla, and my first surgeon said I needed double surgery and my orthodontist assumed I was having double surgery as well.

She went on something about how my case was lucky because I didn't need maxilla (in my head I thought it was because it seemed like my maxilla grew due to my teeth being hella off -like what I said, upper front teeth are leaning out to the left, left molars' distance from the middle greater than right molars' distance from the middle). She also explained to me that Asian people tend to have smaller maxilla -and if I had a bigger one, I'd look weird.

Yeah that's what she said.

3. I told her about how my right cheek muscles have lower volume than my left cheek muscles because I've had this asymmetry in face which caused muscle asymmetry as well. I had cross bite to the left... much jaw biting was concentrated on the left leaving less activity on the right, thus lower muscle volume on my right cheek. And during my recovery, I was more swollen on the left side of my face -could it be because I have more tissue on the left?

She said she'll take a look at it in 3 weeks when I have de-swollen.

I was really expecting to have double surgery. I was born with a small maxilla, and still do. Unlike other people, when I smile, I don't have the regular crease/line on each side. I have 2 creases on each side!! I'm still really upset that I have less muscle volume in my right cheek -I can work on it, but it would help if my maxilla was moved forward.

Here are my before and after pictures

See that I don't have the (parenthesis) when I smile. I do, but they're crooked. I've had that since I was born because of my small maxilla. And also notice that my left cheek has more volume than my left ... well I took that pics with my laptop cam so it's like the mirror image.

I'm really worried when my orthodontist pushes back my upper protruding teeth, I might have an under bite because they just cut 3mm on one side and 5mm on the other.

What do you guys think?? :( Maybe I need to wait when my orthodontist straightens up my teeth to see the real results.

The asymetry is not noticeable- perhaps if someone were standing directly in front of you and then looking left cheek to right cheek while you were perfectly still- then it would be an issue.
And the difference in your bite/smile is absolutely wonderful. You have a gorgeous smile.
Hopefully your bite issues can be resolved with ortho.

First off, relax. Your bite is NOT going to be perfect after surgery. Nobody's ever has been and it's almost impossible...especially if your lower jaw is rotated.

Second, you're being WAY too hard on yourself. The issues you mention are something absolutely nobody would notice. Remember, we're our own worst critic. Even supermodels think they have issues, so it is human nature to think like this, but don't let it ruin your life. Enjoy your results!!

Third, your bite looks SPECTACULAR!! Now, I can't see everything with this picture, but it looks so much better post-op.

I hope you feel somewhat at ease...I don't think you have anything to worry about :)
