I want to buy some protein powder whilst I am unable to eat properly (ready for my operation next month). I mainly want this to cut down on the amount of weight I lose and to speed up recovery. I don't know what sort of protein supplements are best?

http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/ ... variations Is this OK? I haven't a clue what I am looking at really but I saw this on TV yesterday as it is half price so I would like to get it now whilst it is cheap (if it works for me, that is).

I am just doing the Boost powder mix which is working great for me. I drink about 3-4 of them a day and it has helped curb any weight/muscle loss from what I can tell. Doesn't taste too bad either; sometimes I blend in a banana and some Hershey's chocolate syrup. I hear some people do peanut butter, but I am allergic. :P

I have a dietian helping me.

I'm using Isopure protein.

I really suggest Pro-complex protien by Optimum nutrition.

Whatever you do always add a banana for carbs.

my favorite smoothie is this:

1 scoop vanilla Isopure (25g protein) I'm female so you can use 2 scoops natually
1 cup of milk
1-2 tbs peanut butter
1 banana

Also Isopure and Pro-complex have BCAAs and a good chunk of vitamins

Another fav of mine is 1 banana, 1 scoop isopure and 1tbs coconut oil

Plus a spoon full of fiber in all of my smoothies. Go to any GNC or Vitamin shoppe (or similar store) and they can point you in the right direction.

Also let me suggest Myoplex Ready to drink shakes. Dont use ensure it's all carbs and you want to do high protein (per my doctor) to prevent catabolism of your muscle.

OH and one last thing IF you aren't wired shut,

Greek Yogurt + honey

If you are wired shut add some milk.

if you're really worried about weight loss get a BCAA powder and put a scoop in some crystal light &/or Gatorade. You have to put it in a flavored no dairy drink or it's gross. BCAA's help prevent the burning of muscle.

hth.

I did the syntha-6 protein blend from GNC--blended with all kinds of fruit, ect. Very tasty and filling.

I'm very anti synthetic protein, especially a lot of the myoplex ever since they had thos issues with trace amounts of toxins in them (lead, melamine, ew!!). A lot of it doesnt dissolve well and isn't easily absorbed especially if you have any dairy sensetivity.

i'd suggest something that has branched chain aminos. I did hemp protein after surgery and liked the outcome. I love the greek yogurt idea as well, it's great protein that's food-based so more easily absorbable. I'm a big fan of the living fuel company (not sure if they ship to the UK) if you have access to their protein powder.

shutmymouth - that is my favorite smoothie!

I agree with the Ensure being very carb heavy. I have insulin resistance and cannot handle sugary drinks of any kind. The Ensure and regular Boost make me ill due to the sugar. The high protein Boost is okay but costs a few dollars more per package.

I didn't know that about Myoplex. I am tending to make my own smoothies using soy/whey protein and using Muscle Milk light for the middle of the night.
