Just had Orthognathic Surgery 1 week ago.

#1 Post by jyliebean »

Hi everyone!

My name is Jyl and I just had a double jaw orthognathic surgery last tuesday. I had Lefort Osteotomy, Bilateral Sagital split osteotomy, turbinectomy, and septoplasty. i am now 10 days out and am feeling ok, no pain really just uncomfortable from the splint and not being able to talk! Oh ya and eating everything through a syringe! But it has been bad, the first 3 days were really rough! I was only in the hospital for 1 day and then had to return the 3rd day from not being able to breath through my nose ( and since my mouth is swollen I cant breath through it) I was pretty freaked out. Turns out i just over dosed a little on the Afrin. After i stopped that and took the sea salt and I felt much better. I have gained A LOT of sensation back which the doctors are awed over because it normally takes weeks! But now that I am getting sensation back, I think I can feel the sutures on the inside of my mouth on the gum line, its reallly sensitive.

My only concern right now is that the sensation is back, I am starting to be able to smile. which is fine but I feel like smiling is going to rip the stitches, I can feel the tension when I smile, it kind of hurts, so I try not too. But people around me make me laugh so its a hard thing to restrain!

Does anyone know when the stitches will either dissolve or do I get them cut out... I think they are dissolveable ones but I am not sure. I have pain and sensitivity right below my nose on my lip where I am pretty sure the suture site is. I know they are going to be sore, and getting sensation back extremely quick probably does not help with the pain management. If I were still numb, I would not even feel it.

Any suggestions? I know it is going to be a long 6 weeks and i am eager to see the end result! You can already see the difference in my profile and jaws but my cheeks are still puffy. eating through a syringe sucks :x

Your stitches should dissolve around 3 weeks to a month. Some are more stubborn and last longer. I can remember those days of laughing and breaking some stitches. I feel your pain. Best of luck to you!

My stitches were designed to dissolve with the help of salt water rinses. Even though I was pretty diligent, I never was able to manage the 8-10 times a day that was recommended. I am now 1 month post-op and still have my upper stitches. After seeing my OS and learning that the salt water is key, I'm rinsing A LOT and can already see them loosening.

I work in the medical field and never would have even thought of salt water rinses! And its good for healing anyways! Thanks again!

Not being able to breathe sounds terrifying. You're a brave person.

I'll be 6 weeks post op next Tues and my stitches are still firmly in place and showing no signs of dissolving. They can be a little sore at times too so I'm going to try the salt-water rinses, see if that helps - good advice!

My stitches lasted longer then 6 weeks, though probably not by much. I don't remember when the last bits dissolved. I didn't use salt water rinses or do anything special.
