Have you tried to suction out the saliva?

I basically just let the saliva drool on to a towel and tried to gently pull the phlegm from my throat. I know is is gross, but you were at day 2 and it is one of the hardest. By now, you should have some improvement.

Sorry took so long to reply, but is is the long weekend and I'm sure everyone is out and about. Hang in there.

Drinking fluids helps reduce the thickness of saliva - make sure to hit 2L a day.
Drinking something carbonated helps break down the phlegm in the throat.
Take hot showers and allow the steam to loosen up the phlegm.
Swallow it if you have to. Coughing it up was too difficult personally because my neck muscles were so swollen.
