Dead tooth after surgery

Hey Everyone
I had SARPE surgery 3 months ago and I was about to get my braces put on when we noticed that my front tooth is now grey and looks like it has died. The ortho said it could be from any trauma not necessarily from surgery. I now need a root canal before I can get braces.

Has anyone had something similar happen after surgery? Had a tooth/nerve die?

I have a few theories as to what I think may have caused it, one being surgery, two from my night splint and three from my teeth moving so quickly closing the gap by themselves (my teeth have been known to move quickly, hence my 3rd set of braces)

Sorry this has happened. The trauma of surgery can cause tooth loss. Don' tknow if a root canal would help, but you can get an implant placed.

I thought the point of having surgery was to preserve

teeth by improving the bite.

Putting the jaws in the correct alignment can help to preserve your teeth so they don't wear down. But one of the risks of the surgery, albeit small, is that the tooth root may be damaged and cause tooth loss. It is ironic I suppose. The skill of the surgeon is important to prevent this.

Hi,
Sorry to hear this happened to you. I also had sarpe and was warned there was a very small chance this could happen, and if so I would need a root canal. As far as I know, (many relatives have had mant root canals!) once you've had the root canal you should be totally fine, especially seen as how you probably will look after your teeth really well having gone through braces and surgery!
