Hello all,
I am new to this forum. I am due to have surgery in early October, but a final date has not been set yet.

I have a 9-10 overjet and when I first met with the surgeon almost a year ago now, he mentioned that due to the angle of my upper jaw, he may have to do bi-jaw surgery, instead of just the lower jaw.

My question to you is, if you had an overjet, and you had to have surgery on both jaws, what was the reason?

As of right now, if I slide my bottom jaw forward into the position where it will end up being, the only teeth that make contact are my front teeth. None of my molars touch. is that what he means by the "angle" of my upper jaw? My thinking is.. he will have to change the angle of my upper jaw, or lower it to where my teeth will meet.

Did anyone have the same problem before surgery where if you moved your jaw forward, your back teeth didn't touch?

I know I will get my answers in 3 weeks, but I'm just really anxious.

I'm scheduled to have surgery in December. I have an open bite on my right side, none of the teeth on my right come close to touching so I chew mostly on my left side. I think the procedure will be a BSSO but I'm not sure yet.

I did not have bi-jaw surgery, just BSSO/lower. But I did have an overjet, ~ 7mm. My lower jaw was moved forward and my molars meet perfectly.

You cannot accurately simulate how your teeth will meet by sliding your jaw forward, unless you dislocate your jaw (Not recommend... TMJ positions it on both sides of your skull). Braces will change the way your teeth meet, and the angle of your jaws will be changed by surgery.

I suspect that the reason for adjusting the angle in the maxilla (upper jaw) is because that closing it by adjusting the lower jaw would give you a 'shorter' face.

It sounds like you and I will be having similar procedures done. I am getting upper and lower surgery on 18 OCT. From what I was told (which was not much) was that my upper is slightly crooked with the left side a little higher than the right side, which they will correct with lefort. A bsso to move my lower jaw forward, and then some chin action to make everything look good. I did the molds/impressions and x-rays, and my surgeon drew up his plan of attack with all that. Last week he presented this to a panel for approval – which was approved and I was given a surgery date. I wasn’t able to get much info at that time, and what little they were telling me was kinda going over my head. I will be doing my own internet research to get myself smart and then go back with all my question on my next appointment. I did all ready have a SARPE done about a year ago, so I have a good idea of what to expect.

I am the same as you – if I bring my lower jaw forward to just behind my top teeth, then nothing touches. I think this is totally normal, at least from what I have read so far.
