What about sneezing?
I keep reading that you aren't able to blow your nose for awhile after surgery but what do you do when you need to sneeze?
I live in Texas and have terrible allergies, it seems like I sneeze a hundred times per day, what do you do?
Sounds absolutely terrible...

I live in texas too and know about the terrible allergies. I just had upper and lower jaw surgery a month ago and when you sneeze just sneeze through your mouth. The first few times can be scary but nothing happens when you sneeze through your mouth. Oh, and I started blowing my nose very gently by week 4 after surgery.
You will be ok. Good luck!

What part of Texas?
Re: What about sneezing?
I too suffer from allergies (dust mites, pollen, etc.). In my experience, I found that much of my nose was numb due to the LeFort. As a result I rarely sneezed or felt my nose itch. When my nose would run, the sensations were not nearly as strong.Jsmith1972 wrote:I keep reading that you aren't able to blow your nose for awhile after surgery but what do you do when you need to sneeze?

I learned from my OS that the nerves near your upper jaw are much more decentralized than the lower jaw. There's some redundancy built in, which explains why there's really no long term nerve loss in that area (again, compared to the lower jaw where the nerves run in a tight bundle).
Now yawning after surgery (I was wired shut), that was tough.

Re: What about sneezing?
I love it! I have been pondering what a sneeze would be like post surgery and here it is as a topic! I'm going to love being on this board.
Re: What about sneezing?
Completely agree, I was really worried about sneezing but after SARPE I was so numb the first few weeks after surgery I didn't really feel the urge to sneeze, and if did I just did it through my mouth.
Re: What about sneezing?
i was terrified of sneezing after surgery due to being banded shut for 2 weeks. I just suppressed the urge to sneeze and it worked! the first time i did sneeze wasnt actually bad, and now that i'm unbanded it's fine. yawning isnt fun either, but that just suppresses aswell as you can't open your mouth very much. it seems like your body is protecting you! i'm 2.5 weeks post op now.
Re: What about sneezing?
I've sneezed 15 times since my January 8th surgery (Lefort & BSSO) and it wasn't as bad as I expected. (Yeah, I've been keeping a tally. ) I tried very hard to stifle it, but it all came on very quickly.
I read in some of my post-op paperwork that if you have to sneeze, to do it through your mouth. I always sneeze through my mouth anyway. My nose just sort of closes off when I sneeze, so it's more like a cough.

Re: What about sneezing?
Great question...i was thinking this too...but also because i'm always sniffing and blowing my nose when I don't really need to. Been like that for years, since i had glandular fever at 16! I'm nearly 26 now!
I hope this actually makes that habbit go away....a month or so of not being able to sniff or blow my nose. Could be a blessing in disguise!
