Upper jaw surgery after lower jaw surgery

#1 Post by humorme »

I had lower jaw surgery earlier this year. My orthodontist and surgeon had suggested both upper and lower jaw surgery though the main problem was my lower jaw. My lower jaw needed to be moved forward by about 8 mm. My upper jaw is slanted downwards.

I ended up getting just lower jaw surgery since i was a student and had no insurance coverage. My profile did improve a bit after the lower jaw surgery but i wondering now if i should get upper jaw surgery done too. I have very good insurance that maybe able to cover my surgery costs now.

Do you think a jaw surgeon would see me without a referral from Orthodontist if i explain my case? I no longer wear braces and just wear retainers. Any advice on this would be appreciated.

Are you wanting to go to a different surgeon?
What location are you? There are some teams who work together and could advise you.
Did you look at any of the surgeons websites, or at the professional board websites (they have listings). Maybe the best thing is (I think), to find a surgeon who will discuss this with you, and since you already had one surgery. They might want you to work with an orthodontist as well.
Of course, you will find someone because there are surgeons who can do what you need;)
Best luck

If your bite is correct right now (which I am assuming it is), you will not be able to just do upper jaw surgery to improve aesthetics. Moving just the upper jaw would cause your bite to be "off" so you would need upper and lower jaw surgery to get everything back together properly and have a good bite.

Definitely talk to some surgeons in your area to get their opinion.

They would have to rebrace you if you decided to get it done. because they can't perfect your bite with JUST the surgery.

My upper jaw has a slight slant at the front. My bite given the jaw positions has no room for improvement. I can see needing braces post surgery to adjust the bite.

Does anyone know of a surgeon in the NY area who would do surgery without insurance at lower cost?
