should children visit you in hospital after surgery?

#1 Post by maz39 »

HI al,,

Just wondering id any one could ioffer some advice. My childrenb are aged 20, 18, 14 &? 3yrs. I am having double jaw surgery (Bimaxillary osteotomy) in December. My children are keen to visit me while i am hospital. My surgeon predicts a 3-5day stay in hospital, with 2 days in high depency unit (!!).

I have little idea what the recovery looks like- although I have seen a few pictures on blogs and so on. Will i be wired to machines etc? I am not sure if it is better to tell my kids not to come Can anyone advise whether this might be frightening for my children? Any advice gratefully received.

I was told by my surgeon not to have children come into the hospital!

Personally I wouldn't allow any of them in on the first day (that is from watching my sister and DP reactions on the first day), I'd let the 3 older ones in maybe the next day as for the 3 year old - if you can wait a little longer.

My nephew was 4 at the time I had mine and he was stand offish at first (he saw me a week after surgery) and to get him to come around a bit, we played a game. Because I was numb in the face, I would get him to gently touch a spot of my face when I had my eyes closed and I had to guess where - he thought it was great as I usually got it wrong LOL - and he was fine with my look after that!

But definately don't let the 3 year old in on the first day! If you are anything like me, I just allowed the blood to drip out of my nose/mouth as I was too scared to swallow it and I'd start vomitting again!

THat is really helpful, thank you. How old were your kids when you had surgery?
