I am sure this question has been asked on here before, but I need ti know....how much weight have people lost after double jaw surgery? I am about 50 lbs over weight to begin with, so I am not worried about losing weight. I have read where some found it easy to "eat" calories afterwards and other not so much. Not worried, just wondering.
Thanks!

Re: Weight lose after surgery
I have been on a liquid diet for 3 weeks so far and my weight loss has leveled out at 10 lbs from week 1, but it'll come back the moment I return to my regular food.
Thoughts, I've tried to keep short cause I can talk endlessly about it lol:
Having studied this, any weightloss is probably water-weight loss. It takes time and effort to physically burn fat or lose muscle, so often the 10-20lb swing of weight is because of water retention, not actual bodily change.
After that, the body actually finds it easier to use energy from muscles rather than fat, which is why losing weight through dieting isn't very tactical. Weight loss is from muscle, not fat.
On top of that: Like most diets, as soon as you return to regular food, you will return to your 'regular' weight. Basically your weight = current calorie consumption. If you decrease your calories for a while, you decrease your weight as well, but only for a while. As soon as you return to regular calories, you return to regular weight. The only other factor is exercise.

Re: Weight lose after surgery
Hi,
I'm ideal weight and I lost about 8lbs. Upsetting thing was I lost muscle, particularly in my bum (Im not a fan of pancake butt so I was quite upset about this!). It only took about 5 weeks to get back on track ( I weight train and do cardio 3-4 times a week). But in my opinion weight loss in such a way is never going to be healthy, you will most likely lose muscle mass too which means your metabolism slows... just not a good thing in my book. Oh, I lose weight really easily so I was impressed I managed to only lose 8lbs by eating a lot of full fat dairy/ice cream/meal replacement drinks and mashed up regular food....

Re: Weight lose after surgery
Ok, I guess I made it sound as if I wanted to lose a lot of weight. Not if I can't eat. I have read a lot of blogs where people have a really hard time getting the calories. I am not looking forward to the liquid thing. I have 4 kids, I need the energy to keep up with them (2 will be in soccer and 1 in softball at time of surgery. I'm the mom who HAS to be there unless I am dead). I don't retain a lot of water. I am actually very healthy except for my weight. I do yoga 3 times a week. I am sue you know how it is, working, kids, house, no time for you. Luckily the doctor I work with makes sure I get coverage so I get time to do my yoga at lunch.
Anyways, thank you for the quick and helpful responses. I am very grateful to you.

Re: Weight lose after surgery
Hmmm, one of the main concerns my surgeon had was that after surgery I would not have to look after any children, as it would take too much energy while recovering. I have none, so no problems! I would say maybe get a family member or friend to take over childcare, I didnt even have enough energy to leave my bedroom for 3 days, let alone function as a parent, but maybe I'm a rare case! I had to have my spouse pretty much take care of me for the first few days, provide food, help with cleaning, remember when I should take meds. I'm not trying to make it sound scary, it really wasnt, but you need someone to look after you for a few days...
Re: Weight lose after surgery
When I had SARPE done about a year and a half ago, I lost about 15 pounds, however, I quickly gained it back when I started eating solid foods again. With this next surgery, I expect to lose about the same, but I know it won't last.
Re: Weight lose after surgery
I am a little more than 6 weeks post-op, and I am still on a no-chew diet. I had a BSSO and genio, and a few complications. However, I'm officially 23 lbs down from my "official" pre-op weigh-in. I don't have any problems getting my calories now. For the first 4 days I didn't want to move off my couch. I'm a single mom to 2 very active kids, and I was extremely lucky that my mother was here to be with us for a while. My biggest issue with eating has been being able to fulfill my cravings, and it doesn't help that my kids are obviously eating normal food. If you're not too picky about your likes and dislikes there are lots of options for good food, you just have ro probably eat more often. I'm pretty active, so I eat about 4-5 times a day normally. Make sure you don't try to sustain yourself on broth alone and hydrate!!
