Surgeons who also have an M.D. ?

#1 Post by kristy 19 »

Has anyone had surgery or consulted a surgeon who is also a medical doctor? I'm aware that there are some craniofacial and head and neck surgeons who perform orthognathic surgery. Has anyone had their insurance accepted by any of these types of surgeons? Any information is much appreciated.

My surgeon here in Houston had his DDS and MD. I have Aetna insurance and they paid for him to do my surgery.

I've consulted with Dr.Gunson in CA, I know he is also a MD , but he is out of network for all insurance carriers!

Whether or not the surgeon has an MD depends on what route they took on their way to an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency. Some will have come from MD programs, others (most?) will come from DDS programs. I don't think it affects whether or not they are covered under medical insurance.

Personally, I would prefer a DDS (or one with both DDS and MD) over a craniofacial surgeon. A craniofacial surgeon will be more concerned with the rest of the head... the teeth and TMJ? Not as much. An OMFS won't ever venture northwards of a LeFort I.
