I was wondering if the strength of the jaw bone is the same after surgery. I assume that the jaw bone is just like any other bone and after a break in the mead and be stronger then before the break, but is this true with an le fort I. Will the jaw bone and the same strength and ability to take the same stress like before. Is the jaw easier to break if hit?

I don't seem to be getting many answers from my posts, but would greatly appreciate any info.

i would guess it all depends on the surgery. do you plan on boxing? surgeons use titanium screws to mend parts of your jaw bone together.

I know for a fact people have had jaw surgery and then served in the military (US).

Can't really help that much. I had a lefort 1 and haven't been warned off anything by surgeon (long term) at 6 weeks bone is mostly healed but it can take up to a couple of years to regain FULL strength. Obviously after 6 months you're more or less out of the danger zone. That's my perception of it anyway.

You would think after all the healing the fracture site would in fact be stronger than prior to the op!

Thanks for the info everyone. I do plan on returning to martial arts after a year or two, not professionally. At least my fears of having to give that up are no gone.

Thanks again.

i was told to avoid sports of any admin for the first several months of post-op.

my surgery is fairly invasive - both jaws.

also consider complications, numbness, etc...that can make it difficult to tell if your jaw is truly in pain because the numbness might mask issues post-surgery.

like i said, it all depends on the individual and their surgery. realize your face is being rearranged, it can take awhile for your muscles to get used to the changes. in my own personal opinion, i would not engage in contact sports until your jaw is 100% certified by doctors.

I agree cali. I wasn't planning on doing an contact sports until at least a year after surgery. That way It can heal and my braces will be off. I don't plan on going to full strength until 2 years post op just to make sure.

I was told that after 6 weeks Post Op the jaw bone is as strong as it was before the cut it. The weakness is in the muscles.
