Question:Risk of loosing sight vision during jaw surgery

#1 Post by lishuai »

I just had my first consultation to correct my class III with OS today. He thinks i need SARPE to expand my top jaw first then a second surgery to bring it forward. As he talked about the risks he mentioned the risk of loosing sight vision. He said because the top jaw bone is not far away from the eye sockets there is 1 out of 10000 chance of loosing the sight, as when they fracture the top jaw off, the way it breaks is not something the surgeons have much of a control, if it breaks upwards then it will affect the eyes. He said during the ten years that he is in the industry it happened once and it was in Brisbane Australia where I am. He said that surgeon stopped doing surgeries after that happened. I am very concerned about this as being blind is so much much worse than having a class III.
Can someone please give me some information about this?

They're just giving informed consent so you know ALL the risks. It's like those commercials for medication that thickens your eyelashes that tell you how you're going to poop your brains out and die if you use it.

A risk of 1 in 10,000 is too small to worry about really. Even if the socket is compromised, it won't be both eyes and it's likely that you won't lose all the sight in the eye that's affected. This risk wasn't mentioned to me at all, but I guess I know it can happen. I'm an optician.
