Cost for Orthognathic Surgery - Ontario, Canada

Hey there guys an gals,

I noticed some people on this forum were curious to know the cost for Orthognathic surgery (double jaw surgery in my case) in Eastern Ontario, Canada, and I would just like to say that I had a consultation and the estimate, or should we say firm price was $2,500CDN. The rest will be covered by OHIP.

Please understand that this estimate is different for everyone, and this was the cost/set price for my individual case.

Also, as stated this is for double jaw surgery, and excluding any orthodontic wear. My braces are costing me out of pocket $7,600CDN - please don't ask how I can afford it, because financially it is very difficult, seeing as I am a full-time student and only work part time. My employer also does not cover anything cosmetic, such as braces.

So anyways, I thought I would like to just send the word out, if anyone was curious to know.

Hope this helps any fellow cunucks out there who lives in Eastern Ontario, Canada.

Regards,

Alejandroe84

I think you are right about the price depending on each case. I to live in eastern Ontario (just outside of Toronto) I have been in braces for 2 years (cost $7200) and I'm having double jaw surgery and genio in less then 48 hours. In total I have paid my surgeon about $700 dollars and $1200 to have my wisdom teeth removed. What helped me is my orthodontist provided my surgeon with my pre surgery molds at his cost as well as the skull x-rays.

We are very fortunate as I know many friends I have made on this forum have paid thousands of dollars.

:)

My 2 cents

Hey there,

I do fully agree with you about being fortunate enough to not have to pay thousands of dollars. I also understand our healthcare system can be of benefit us to some degree - though the Canadian health care system can be discussed for days on end, on another time and date.

I was fortunate enough to not have any wisdom teeth extractions, but then again, I had never had any grown in, so there was no cost for me in regards to wisdom teeth. My orthodontist was, though debating on whether to extract premolars, but my surgeon advised me that it would not be necessary -*phewph*

Anyways, the only other issue I'm concerned about, other than financially, is the general anesthesia - I have sleep apnea, and I understand I will have to discuss this with my surgeon during my next appointment - I understand there are risks, but I want to be able to wake up after my surgery - once again, another topic, another day.

Cheers,

Hi again,

I know I'm off topic here, but if you are planning on having double jaw surgery you are in luck as far as your sleep apnea goes. Upper jaw surgery is not just for people with misaligned jaws, but is also used to cure sleep apnea.

As far as the actual procedure goes, (and by no means am I medical advice) but during the surgery you are given a breathing tube inserted through your nose into your lungs to breath for you.

I had my pre op appointment a few days ago and was told about the breathing tube by the anesthesiologist.

Cheers
Cash

Hey there,

Thanks for the useful information about upper jaw surgery. I was never aware of that my sleep apnea could be cured with just jaw surgery alone. I will be sure to bring this up with my surgeon as well, just to be sure of the risks and consequences, and of course a potential cure for my sleep apnea.

Wow. I was not aware that they would put a tube down my throat - I only thought for general anesthesia they would prop me with an injection to put me on cloud nine. Again, I will discuss with my surgeon about what type of anesthesia they would be giving me, I'm sure its nothing too complicated, I just would like to not have to worry about the negative risks associated with my sleep apnea, and general anesthesia.

Thanks again for your input :)

Wow you guys are lucky. Alberta Heathcare doesn't pay anything anymore. $3-4000 per jaw, no ifs ands or buts. The hospital bed, etc, however is covered.

Indeed because here when the surgeon judge that's is a functionality problem ( or could lead to problems eventually) it will end up being paid by the QMPI. Although the 2k you must pay from your pocket. This include the "surgeon fees" or analyses and lab fees if you want. Bed is paid by QMPI. I only went to intensive care unit (intensive care unit) for one night the on the morning I was discharged from the hospital. My surgeon is a guy that doesn't like to keep his patients in the hospital. The guy is quick and really good. Take care of his patients and always available.

I can PM but my surgeon doesn't take patients unless they are referred to him by a dentist or orthodontist.
