Are wisdom extractions necessary before lower jaw surgery?

Hi there,

I have a Class II malocclusion with mandibular retrognathia (I think that's the word for it - my lower jaw is far too far back), and being 16 now I believe it's too late to treat my skeletal deformity in any way other than to have my lower jaw advanced surgically - at least that's what an orthodontist I saw a few months ago implied, and from what I've later read online it does seem that other, non-surgical methods of advancing the mandible don't work on people who've stopped growing.

I'm quite comfortable with the thought of having this surgery at some point in the future if I ever had orthodontic work done - however is having your lower wisdoms extracted always a necessary procedure before the surgery is performed? Or can they make the incisions somewhere else along the mandible? I'm curious because I would really like to keep as many of my teeth as possible if I ever do get my bite and skeletal deformity fixed!

Sorry if this is a silly question!

Thank you in advance :)

I think they need to remove them to get the extra room to make cuts/adjustments. It's debatable whether wisdom teeth really serve any real function anyways.

If your lower jaw is smaller than it should be (classII) likely the wisdom teeth are just in the way anyways.

Yes in most cases, so they can make extra cuts etc. I am having mine removed during surgery

I think so, my surgeon wouldnt do my double jaw surgery until all my wisdoms were removed
