My ortho has always said that my surgeon is going to take them out during surgery, but everything I've read they are meant to be taken out 6 months prior to surgery?!
is this normal? I don't want my ortho to turn around and say 'we will take your wisdom teeth out before surgery' and add another 6 months on, but its not normal for them to be taken out during jaw surgery???? help anyone?

I've read about several people getting all four wisdom teeth out during jaw surgery so I think it's pretty common.

My surgeon removed a wisdom tooth during surgery. Nobody said anything about it beforehand, but surgeon told me it would give me more room to expand.

I had my surgery on Friday and the surgeon did the wisdom teeth as well. He had planned on it from the beginning, and I know a couple of other people who had them done simultaneously. I've felt very little pain- slight discomfort- but nothing too bad. I think it's actually easier just getting it all done at once.

I asked my ortho if they could do both jaw surgery and wisdom tooth extraction in one go, but he said they prefer not to (maybe because my lower wisdoms never erupted?). So I had my wisdom teeth out in November. I haven't decided on jaw surgery yet.

My surgeon never even considered a separate procedure for the wisdom teeth. When reviewing his plan of care, he just said he would do them at the same time as my jaw and I would feel a lot less discomfort that way (which could quite possibly be true, as all I really felt for a few days was numbness.) All I take is Tylenol.

Depending on what sort of surgery you are having may effect why they do it. For the lower jaw removal of unerupted & impacted wisdoms can mean they need to remove some bone which can then weaken the lower jaw making it prone to break when the surgery is completed.

All 4 of my wisdom teeth were fully grown by the age of 15, which I'm glad because they have no way of messing up the rest of my teeth, just one of them has grown towards my pallet

I had my lower jaw surgery on the 1st of April. I also had three wisdom teeth taken out. Two of them were impacted which were in the lower jaw.
So far there has been no problem. Maybe it might contribute to more swelling.
