Southern California Kaiser Surgeon

#1 Post by cassiem »

Can anyone recommend a good surgeon with Kaiser in California? Preferably in Southern California but I found out today I could also go to a Northern California Kaiser doctor. I would like to stay with Kaiser because I will just have to pay a small copay for the surgery, but I am considering changing insurance providers because I do not know what surgeon to see with Kaiser. I met with one surgeon but the consultation was not as comprehensive as I thought it would be at this point in my orthodontic treatment so I am apprehensive about going with him.

Thank you!

Until you are nearing your surgery date, there's not much concrete to discuss. The surgical plan can change up until a few days before surgery when the surgeon performs "model surgery" on your final pre-surgical molds.

I would recommend Gabriella Tehrany. I had mine done with her. She does a good job of listening to your concerns and considering the aesthetic aspect of the results, not just the functional. My results from her end of the surgeries has been really stable even 2 years afterwards (she makes sure to prevent relapse).

I think the particular Kaiser Oral/Maxiofacial Surgery department that she works at (Sunset Kaiser) is also one of the better ones out of the Southern California Kaisers, so if you're doing it in SoCal, I would probably go with an oral surgeon there.

Thank you for the recommendation sarpevivictim. I think I will try to schedule a consultation with her. I also heard about another surgeon with Kaiser named Randal Schoeman, so I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this doctor? He is at the Anaheim Kaiser.

I used Dr. Alexander Kim in San Marcos for my SARPE, and absolutely adore him...he's going to be doing my double jaw as well. He was very thorough, and made sure I was comfortable with every plan they have for addressing my screwed up jaw (my term of endearment for my jaw, not his). I can't say enough good things about Dr. Kim!

Who did you end up going with? I had Tehrany and think she did a good job. I echo sentiments mentioned before.

IMO, I would steer clear of Kaiser. You are just a number to them. Very treat em' and street em' there due to the sheer volume of patients they see. Sure, they cover everything and you won't be a huge amount out of pocket, but in my case, I got what I paid for. I am in the process of fixing a huge mess thanks to their botched jaw surgery on me in 2014. Completely immoral and unethical what happened with them. I was with Felice O'Ryan out of Kaiser Oakland. I can tell you now that I have seen quite a few other surgeons in the course of all the appointments for my revision surgery that the care from Kaiser is completely sub standard to what you'll get from most other surgeons. I've spent more time at my consults with most other surgeons than my Kaiser doc spent with me the whole time I was in their care for the jaw surgery.

Just my .02, but I would never tell another person to go through Kaiser. If you're OK with minimalist care and want to save the most money, then go for it, but at least you know what you're getting in to.
