January 2016 Surgery Buddies!

#1 Post by PashaBursi »

Really should've started this thread earlier! I'm hopefully (got a cold at the moment :( ) having double jaw surgery on January 12th! Right now the plan is to move my top jaw forward 4mm and my bottom jaw 1/2mm but my surgeon hasn't told me what she'll do exactly. My underbite isn't that severe, I pretty much can mask it my pushing my top lip just a little further over my bottom lip but I hate smiling. Because it's not severe (my teeth were touching before I got braces) I'm really starting to have doubts! I have low expectations of any cosmetic improvements (even though I really really would like them!) so I'm just getting cold feet wondering if all this money and tough recovery will be worth me being able to bite an apple!

Me too scheduled for lower jaw advancement only. I have not had photos or molds done yet but they guesstimate 4-5mm forward. Im hoping for functional improvement with the bonus of the improved esthetics I guess.

Good luck! How long left before the surgery? Are you nervous at all? I haven't been that nervous actually but I think I'm still in denial and I'll just have a complete breakdown the morning of

yes so nervous and on the fence like I need to back out. Did you say only 1/2 mm on bottom? Did I read that right? Maybe you could get away with just upper, Idk. I am have between 3-5 mm and that seams like so little and I really wish I new how much this will be worth it. Thats the biggest ? in my mind.

Hi, My official date is on January 18th!
I've been waiting so long for this surgery...my first consultation with my surgeon was in March 2014 and I was braced on May 2014.
In the original plan I should have had surgery in the summer of 2015 but sadly we ended up with a lot of delay even though my bite was in perfect position since September/October. I'm a bit disappointed with the timing (I'll have to skip the entire exams' session) but I accepted because I don't want to wait more.

I have an underbite and an asymmetry so the plan is to have a double jaw surgery. My upper jaw will be moved forward 2mm and impacted posteriorly so to give me a more showing smile. My lower jaw will be moved back around 6mm. They'll also perform a clockwise rotation of my lower jaw (didn't understand if they want to do it for the upper jaw too).
They said these measures are up for change during surgery if they need to.

I'm still not overly anxious for the surgery...I guess it's still early but I'm happy to finally have a date.

I'm very self conscious about my underbite and it undermined my social life for so long so I can't wait for my new bite and hopefully new life :D

Good luck everybody

Around 1-2mm he said! (Not 0.5mm) My movements aren't huge either, and I'm really starting to think will it be worth it too! In my head my underbite and sunken flat profile is really bad but the surgeon said its not and I shouldn't expect a transformation. But I really want a transformation! For me this whole process, the costs, the recovery was all okay because I thought I'd look how I thought I would and now I'm not too sure! But as long as the bites right then surely it should be worth it.

Hi StefanoMI! Not too long after me! You've been ready for so long! I don't know how you've been so patient. I only had the courage to put on braces in preparation for surgery 9 months ago and I've been told I needed this surgery 7 years ago  Are you excited for your surgery?

1-2mm will make a difference. And combined with your braces, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the outcome from surgery. Just be patient. It takes a loooooooong time for the swelling to completely go away, especially with double jaw surgery.

Yeah, my surgery is scheduled just 6 days after yours. I'll read your posts to get an idea of what to expect
I'm very excited but I have lots of things to do in the next 2 weeks so I'm not gonna stress about it yet...I'm trying to relax and keep on living without worrying about it until the day before surgery!

Hey guys! I had my double jaw surgery in December but thought I'd join you in this thread. Good luck to those having your surgeries soon, and I hope you're stuffing as much solid food into your faces as you can. :P

Well I am officially post op now! I'm on my 3rd day now! I've got to be honest, the first night was not pleasant. My nose was completely blocked and still is but I've just gotten used to breathing out of my mouth now. I actually slept okayish last night. The surgeon told me I can sleep on my side as long as my head is elevated. I've got some of my appetite back which is good so I can start healing but bad because I just want actual food. My jaws are totally banded shut for a month so it's a total liquid diet for me :( My swelling is pretty bad but not really bothersome, it just feels tight around my mouth but I can't talk much anyway and don't feel like laughing just yet so it's not an issue. Haven't really had any pain but I'm taking my ibruprofen and Tylenol regularly. I just get terrible headaches especially when I'm trying to sleep, but no actual jaw pain just a bit of pressure.

I've read a lot of recovery stories and everyone's different. What I have noticed is that I feel completely different today than I did yesterday. My journal entry and general messages to friends and family were totally miserable and would put anyone off from having this surgery. I think I underestimated how difficult recovery would be in the beginning because I always read recovery stories from one week post surgery.

In terms of my face, it's hard to tell. I obviously look incredibly different but I have an incredible amount of swelling so I don't know what I actually look like at all, it's much too early. It's interesting to look at though, the human body is fascinating! I can't believe what's been done to my face and I'm sat sipping on pineapple juice while my facial bones have been broken and repositioned!

I put on 1.5kg in the week before surgery when I found out I'd be banded shut, I'm 3 days post op and just weighed myself at 51.5kg so I've lost that and a further 500g

That's what I did! I didn't really think about it until the night before and when I got to the hospital in the morning everything was done so quickly that I never gave myself a chance to panic! I did for a few minutes being wheeled into surgery and into the operating room but I'm just naturally nervous like that and the staff were so lovely and relaxed and excited for me, it wasn't a bad experience at all!
