Lower jaw surgery: clicking at one of the break points?

#1 Post by 3cheersforsweetteeth »

Hi folks. Had my lower jaw surgery to correct overbite five weeks ago today. Healing has been going well...no infections, bite is perfect and pain has largely dwindled (still getting headaches but I'm also changing my bands every day, so assuming that's the issue -- they aren't unbearably sore).

However, there is one issue that is really freaking me out a bit. One week after my surgery, my bands were removed by my surgeon to examine me, and when I tried to open my mouth a little, I felt a clicking in my lower left jaw. Five weeks later, and now that I can open my mouth I still get this clicking. Never during vertical movement, but if I move my jaw to the side, it happens. It's stopping me from trying to chew food, honestly, because I'm worried about what it means (I don't have another appointment with my ortho for quite some time).

There is absolutely no pain associated with this clicking and there is no swelling left in my face. I feel pretty much fine. So my question is...has anyone experienced this before? Should I be concerned? If it doesn't subside soon I will attempt to contact my surgeon, just thought I'd ask here first.

Thanks :D

I feel I should clarify -- and apologies if double posting isn't allowed, I couldn't find an edit button -- this clicking doesn't seem to be TMJ related -- the click seems to be originating from the break point of my lower jaw, not below my ear. And there is absolutely no clicking on the right side. Thanks

If its clicking at the surgical cut in the bone where your screws or plates are, I'd make an appointment with your surgeon sooner than later. Could be lots of different things.
Round 3 (lifetime) Damon stainless applied 3/16/20 (after 4 weeks attempting invisalign) On for about 18 months
Night time elastics with invisalign retainers; still...
Double jaw surgery was 6/18/15...
Orthodontics never really ends...
I'm emphatically against extraction orthodontics!

You have to be a full member (I think its 7 or more posts) to get edit rights for your posts. So double posting like you did is allowed :)

If I were you, I would call your surgeon sooner rather than later. It could be nothing, it could be something. At 5 weeks post op, you probably do still have swelling, it's just not as noticeable. I still have swelling and I'm 4 months post op.
