Upcoming Jaw Surgery in less than 2 weeks

#1 Post by proedl »

Hello All!

This is my first post after coming across this site, so I thought I'd stop by and see what it was all about.

I am a 25 year old who has had braces for about 2 and a half years, and just signed some paperwork today to do a BSSO on the 16th of August. As my appointment today, my surgeon said I should get a good 5-6mm of my overbite gone and he seemed to be pretty relaxed about the whole process. I am not as relaxed, so I thought I would get some insight from people who have already had the surgery, or possibly chat with people who are going to be going through the surgery at the same time! I'm pretty excited to have the procedure done, but I get nervous about the recovery.

If you have any good tips to keep my sane during the recovery, what to expect on my recovery, have any good recipes for the first two weeks, or want to recommend some good shows/movies to watch; Let me know!

Thanks guys!
P :)

Hello, it must be really exciting! Haha, I guess a tip would be to prepare the ingredients needed to make your meal. The only thing that kept me sane after surgery was the oreo milkshake I made. If your mouth is wired shut, try to avoid very acidic soups because it is just urgh, I tried drinking tomato soup, bad idea. Honestly, I wasn't super prepared for my surgery (hehe, im very lazy), I still managed to get through it, first 2 weeks were rough, but it got better after that.

The first week I got out, I felt completely out of it. Like I didn't want to do anything. Wanted to sleep all day but it was very uncomfortable so I couldn't. But don't worry you will be fine :^)

Trust your doctor, you will be gr8!! :D

The Wire. There were a couple of us that watched every season of it while off from work for the surgery. It's a great show, and free on Amazon Prime :D A good movie is Winter on Fire, about the civil unrest leading up to the Ukrainian revolution. It's free on Netflix.

Alternatively, you could just watch all 9 seasons of SpongeBob SquarePants  :gavel:

OH yes The Wire! I just got HBO Go a few weeks ago and completely forgot about it! I'll have to check it out and see whats good. I'm not the biggest Spongebob fan but who knows, maybe it will hilarious when I'm on pain medicine haha.

For sure! I'm getting more and more excited each day. I don't think I will be wired shut, just banded. haha luckily. Thanks for the tip on the soups, I feel like I'm pretty lazy getting prepared tho as well, probably because I don't think its actually real yet. I don't really use message boards much so I cant figure out these quote things

I was banded shut too, but my doctor only allowed me to regularly changed them after the 2nd week. It was a hassle to take them out and put them back on just to eat haha, so clear soups are the best. Excited for you!! Would be cool if you could update on your surgery!

Here's my first day update so far. Had surgery yesterday at 9 am. Everything went well and spend a good part of the day/night sleeping and watching the Olympics.

My day after the surgery is going my better than expected. Have only had water to drink and no food but I am doing already. There isn't much pain and my lower lip is tingly so my surgeon says that the nerve is just fine and not damaged at all. I am swollen and my face kind of looks like Joe from family guy. I've been going on walks which is good because I get bored fast, and showering was awesome. Made me feel so much better. I should be headed back home in a few hours and am excited to get back in my own bed now.
