Double jaw and genio scheduled for Sept. 12

#1 Post by littlebird »

Hi All, I've been a lurker for a few months but decided to join now that I'm less than two weeks out from surgery. I'm having a Lefort I, BSSO, and genio. I got my braces on 1/13, surgical hooks on 9/1, and surgery is scheduled for 9/12.

I'm 35 and have never liked how I looked, but the main reason I'm having the surgery is my airway--a 3D scan last year showed that my airway is only 25 percent the diameter it should be. I was diagnosed with exercise induced asthma when I was a teenager because I couldn't breathe well when running, but inhalers never seemed to fix the issue. What they didn't know back then was my airway issue. Had I known, I would have had this surgery years ago. Better late than never, though!

Anyone else having surgery in September? I'm nervous, excited, and frantically trying to prepare. I'm so thankful to this blog and its members for the wealth of information on orthognathic surgery! :D

Best wishes! Hope it goes well! Keep us all posted. I'm having a similar procedure in November. (double jaw and genio as well). So, I hope you'll post on your progress.

Thanks for the well wishes; they're greatly appreciated. This evening has been really tough for some reason. I'm questioning my decision to have the surgery and am feeling extremely overwhelmed. I have this crushing anxiety about how things are going to turn out. Is this normal??? How do I get through this??

Haha completely normal. "How did everything move so fast?! I wanted to do it but now that it's getting close and starting to feel real, do I really want to go through with it?!" If you're anything like me, on the final day before surgery you'll essentially be coasting through the day on autopilot cuz you'll be so distracted and out of it  That said, the last few weeks before the surgery are pretty nerve-wracking. I don't know anyone on here who wasn't extremely anxious about it. You'll be fine tho!!! Just focus on getting what you need (a bunch of Ensures in allllll the flavors, dark chocolate was my fav) and figuring out what to do to entertain yourself for a couple weeks. I bought a Roku and downloaded The Wire and some other stuff.

Also, know that I have no regrets about going through with it! I'm glad I did; it's made a big difference in my life :D

Also posted this in the Early fall/Winter thread (I don't know if it's possible to link them so I'm just copying here too):

Well here's an update on my insurance situation. Due to multiple clerical errors by insurance and surgeon's office, the upper jaw and genio portions of my pre-approval package were deemed not medically necessary. I just found out a few hours ago. We are going to appeal, it makes no sense for those to be denied when the lower jaw was approved back in May.

Surgery tentatively rescheduled for Oct. 17. Going to see if ortho can remove some of the surgical hooks because they're creating ulcers even with wax on, and I can't handle that for another 5 weeks.
Issues: Class III retrognathic jaw, overbite, open bite, 4 mm airway
Braces on: Jan. 13, 2016
Surgery: Nov. 7, 2016; Lefort I, BSSO, and genioplasty

Hopefully it all works out. My genio was initially denied, but my surgeon cleared it up quickly. Moving the chin forward opens the airway even more due to moving the soft tissues, including your tongue, with it. So your surgeon should be able to take care of it.
