Hello! I just wanted to introduce myself since I read in the rules that a post has to be made within a day or two of registering

I am 22 years old and about 6 months ago I finally started on my journey to fix my "broken" face. First wisdom teeth came out, then a month later I was braced in October in preparation for double jaw surgery. I have a class III bite and a slight open bite that wasn't too noticeable before braces because my teeth were tipped and crooked to compensate for eating. I have noticed my TMJ has gotten a lot worse since being braced (although I've been dealing with it since I was 15) Sometimes the jaw clicking and headaches can truly be unbearable, but I also know it has to get worse before it gets better! I'm holding on to that

My course of treatment was originally projected to take about 24 months. Braces on for a year, surgery, then braces kept on for another year after surgery. I would be lying if I said I was not nervous. I am a mom to a 6 and 2 year old daughter so I'm pretty worried about being out of commission for awhile. As you have probably gathered, that's why it's taken me so long to start this process. But better late than never!

I would love to hear some of your stories and some tips and advice that may help during this process. I live in a small town where I don't know anyone who has gone through this before.

Congrats on starting your journey! I was in a similar position to you a year ago, I've now had my double jaw surgery earlier than anticipated and am through the other side.

Best advice I can suggest is the importance of a support system for you and your children post-op. Not just while you're in hospital but help at home while you recuperate. It took me about 4 weeks to regain my energy which is tough.

Don't feel bad waiting until you're 22 to do this. I'm 36 and finally got around to doing it myself. 3 weeks post-op yesterday! Technology wasn't nearly as advanced 14 years ago though, so I'm kind of glad I waited. Good luck to you!

I also waited and have mixed feelings. It would have been easier in my 20s as I only had myself to worry about, but I was definitely better informed and psychologically ready now, which made a big difference.
