New to surgery

#1 Post by sillikitti »

Hey all..I am 23 yrs old and I just got back from my first ortho consultation yesterday and was told I would be in braces total 21 months and after 9 months to get lower jaw surgery cuz of my deep overbite. I have never been in the hospital for anything so I am absolutley TERRIFIED. I have to get my wisdom teeth pulled as well. Anyone know how long you are "put to sleep" for with the jaw surgery? And I was also told I would be okay to go back to work after 2 weeks or so and how do you feel when you wake up? Does it really feel like a broken bone or does it just ache? I just want to gather as much info as possible now so I can get over my mega nervousness...thanks all :)

sillikitti,

I had upper jaw surgery in August...I don't know much about lower jaw surgery. As far as my recovery went, I took 10 days off of work and felt fine. I didn't have much pain, but the pain I did have felt really achey.

As far as your hospital stay and anesthesia goes...I just felt really tired and groggy after I woke up. I went home and took a long nap and that made me feel better. My surgery was about and hour and a half. I had a good experience overall. I am a nurse, and work in a recovery room, just know that everyone's experience is different. If you've never had surgery before, ask the anesthesia doctor to give you some nausea medicine before you wake up...alot of times people get nauseated from the "sleeping" drugs and the pain medicine they give.

You'll probably be on a soft food diet for a while after surgery, so stock up on Ensure or Boost and lots of stuff to make milk shakes and smoothies.

anyways, hope this helps
