SARPE??? Surgery done In hospital or Doctors office???

#1 Post by Brandyleigh35 »

I'm 42 and I'm scheduled for a SARPE on March 3rd, along with an upper wisdom tooth, and lower molar extraction all at the same time. I have lots of questions!
For those of you that had this surgery was it done in the hospital or as an out patient procedure in your oral surgeons office, or surgery center? Just wondering what the norm is?

Hey there! Last Feb. I had the SARPE surgery, and all wisdom teeth taken out. Mine was done in the hospital with a oral surgeon. Went really well, no pain. They knock you out, and when you wake up you have puffy cheeks. A week after the surgery is when you start cranking open the expander. After a week of cranking twice a day I had a pretty nice gap b/w my fron teeth (about the size of a tooth). The "Cranking" of the expander didn't hurt either. Just took a tylenol for dull headaches from it. That was basically it.

Thanks! I couldn't stand it so I called and ask how this would be done. They told me that it is done in the office with IV sedation (they call it Conscious sedation) but she said I will be in a happy place and won't feel or remember anything! I was quite happy about that! LOL...

Otherwise I"m looking forward to getting it over and done with!

I've been there twice: I had my wisdoms and impacted canines extracted under IV sedation and true, you won't feel a thing. You may hear things, but you just don't care about what's going on around you. And the rest you'll probably just forget about.

From the first sedation I don't remember anything but getting the injection and then being told "We're done, can you stand up?" after an hour or so. I thought I had just lied there totally out of it, but at my check up appointmet afterwards my OS laughed and said we had "had quite some conversations" during the surgery  Can't remember. I hope I haven't said anything completely silly like "I love you, doc" or anything. I've heard that happened to someone!
From the latter sedation I remember being more "there". I heard sounds (the tools, the radio on, pieces of conversation between the OS and his assistants, stuff like that) and even felt something but I wouldn't call it pain.
All in all it was a good experience both times.

Oh, forgot to mention: my SARPE was done in the OS's office, too. That was done under general anesthesia.
Case: Impacted canines, crowding & crossbite.
Treatment: SARPE 2004/10/6, RPE 2004/9/28 - 2005/1/31, w-arch until 2005/11/22, impacted canines extracted 2005/5/18.
Braces on: top 2005/6/2, bottom 2005/8/30.
Braces off: 2008/6/9.
Retainers, phase one: expanding Hawley retainer 24/7, bonded retainers on top & bottom.
Retainers, phase two: Hawley on top, bonded both top & bottom, positioner for night time use.

You were intubated (had a breathing tube) in an OS office? Was there an anesthesiologist present? How long did you stay after? That is sooooooooo scary.

They have a fully equipped operating room there so calling it an "office" actually gives a wrong idea about it.
An anesthesiologist was present of course and he discussed all the details with me before the surgery. Also there were 2 or 3 nurses in the room, the whole team, that is.
The surgery took about an hour and a half. I woke up the recovery room very soon after and they let my boyfriend escort me home in another hour and a half or so. There was really nothing to worry about, all very hospital like without having to stay in.

I understand your question, tho - if I hadn't seen the operating room when I first met the OS a couple of months before the operation I would have had second thoughts myself
