Lisp when invisalign is taken out?

#1 Post by pearlywhites »

Hi there,

I am considering getting invisalign and am aware that it will affect my speech if I do. Just wondering if you still have a lisp when you are not wearing aligners or when you have finished treatment?

the lisp can and does effect people in different ways i must admit that it was 1 of my biggest fears but just do some planning thats what invisalign is all about ie if you start treatment before a holiday or book a few days off work to get used to them and how to talk. I had little or no problem with a lisp the only thing i can sort of remember is either having a really dry mouth or a drool im not sure which but it lasted less than a week i think :)

Thanks for the reply diehard. It's good to know that it's not that bad for everyone! Anyone else able to give some insight?

I never had a lisp, whether in or out and am on 13 of 17 and 19. Perhaps talking to the furnance repairman extensively less than 15 minutes after I got home on that first day helped! I had the whole weekend to practice removal before going back to work. Removal was the worst part. After I got the guitar picks (which I still use for the really hard ones to get out after switching sets), my removal problem was eliminated.

I think it just depends on the person whether or not there will be a lisp. I am a singer, play musical instruments, and am a trained public speaker where enunciation is key to not being misunderstood. So, to get good results, some adjustments to speaking, singing, or playing style may be necessary but those came natural for me so much that I didn't even notice making the adjustments. Likewise, I can naturally adjust when the aligners are out, too.

Good luck!!
